I Editor's note: This is an
open letter to college students
from FBI director J Edgar
Hoover, in which he describes
methods campus extremists
use to lure students inn, violent
and disruptive protest.
iThe Red and Black prints it
without endorsement It is used
b> permission ol l uted Press
International which dispatched
it from Washington early this
week. I
As a 1970 college student, you
belong to the best educated,
most sophisticated, most
poised generation m our histo
ry
The vast majority of you. I
am convinced, sincerely love
American and want to make it
a better country
You do have ideas of your
own things wrong in our society
which wc adults perhaps have
minimized or overlooked You
are outspoken and frank and
hate hypocrisy That is good,
too
THERE'S NOTHING wrong
with student dissent or student
demands for changes in society
or the display of student unhap
piness over aspects of our na
tional policy Student opinion is
a legitimate aspect of public
opinion in our society
But there is real ground for
concern about the extremism
which led to violence, lawless
ness. and disrespect for the
rights of others on many col
lege campuses during the past
year
THE EXTREMISTS are a
small minority of students and
(acuity members who have lost
faith in America They ridicule
the flag, poke fun at American
insUtuUons. seek to destroy our
society They are not interested
in genuine reform They take
advantage of the tensions,
strife, and often legitimate
frustrations of students to
promote campus chaos They
have no rational, intelligent
plan of the future either for the
university or the nation
The extremists are of wide
variety: Adherents of the Stu
dents for a Democratic Society
iSDSl including the Weather
men. members of the Young
Socialist Alliance 1YSA1. the
Trotskyist youth group the
Communist party's Young
Workers Liberation League
(YWLL) Or they may be asso
ciated with the Student Mobi
lization Committee to end the
war in Vietnam (SMC), a
Trotskyist dominated antiwar
group
MANY ARE no* associated
with any national group The
key point is not so much the
identification of extremists but
learning to recognize and un
derstand the mentality of
extremism which believes in
violence and destruction
Based on our experience in
the FBI, here are some of the
ways in which extremists will
try to lure you into their activi
ties:
They'll encourage you to lose
respect for your parents and
the older generation This will
be one of their first attacks,
trying to cut you off from
home You'll hear much about
the failures" and "hypocrisy"
of your parents and their
friends The older generation
has made mistakes But - your
parents and millions of other
adults worked hard, built, sacri
ficed and suffered to make
American what it is today It is
their country too You may dis
agree with them, but don t dis
credit their contributions
• They'll try to convert you
to the idea that your college is
"irrelevant and a tool of the
establishment " The attack
against the college administra
tion often is bitter, arrogant,
and unreasoning SDS'ers. for
example have sought to dis
rupt the colleges by demanding
the right to select professors,
determine the curriculum, and
set grading standards
• They'll ask you to abandon
your basic common sense
Campus extremism thrives on
specious generalizations, wild
accusations, and unverified al
legations. Complex issues of
state are wrapped in slogans
and cliches Dogmatic state
ments are issued as if they
were the final truth You should
carefully examine the facts,
don't blindly follow courses of
action suggested by extremists
Don't get involved in a cause
just because it seems "fashion
able" or the "thing to do Ra
tional discussion and rational
analysis are needed more than
ever before
oThey'll try to envelop you
in a mood of negativism, pessi
mism, and alienation toward
yourself, your school, your na
tion This is one of the most in
sidious of new left poisions
SDS and its allies judge Amen-
c exclusively from its flaws
They see nothing good, posi
tive. and constructive This
leads to a philosophy of bitter
ness. defeatism, and rancor I
would like you to know your
country more intimately. I
would want you to look for the
deeper unifying forces in Amer
ica. the moods of national char
acter. determination, and sac
rifice which are working to cor
rect these flaws. This rea

strength of our nation is the
power of morality, decency,
and conscience which rights the
wrong, corrects error, and
works for equal opportunity
under the law
• They'll encourage you to
disrespect the law and hate the
law enforcement officer Most
college students have good
friends who are police officers
You know that when extremists
call the police "pigs" they are
wrong The officer protects
your rights, lives, and property
He is your friend and he needs
your support
o They’ll tell you that any
action is honorable and right if
it’s "sincere" or "idealistic" in
motivation. Here is one of the
most seductive of new left ap
peals — that if an arsonist's or
anarchist s heart is in the right
place, if he feels he is doing
something for "humanity" or a
"higher cause," then his act,
even if illegal, is justifiable
Remember that acts have con
sequences The alleged sinceri
ty of the perpetrator does not
absolve him from responsibili
ty. His acts may affect the
rights, lives and property of
others Just being a student or
being on campus does not auto
matically confer immunity or
grant license to violate the law
Just because you don’t like a
law doesn't mean you can vio
late it with impunity
o They'll ask you to believe
that you. as a student and citi
zen. are powerless by demo
cratic means to effect change
in our society Remember the
books on American history you
have read They tell the story of
the creative self-renewal of this
nation through change Public
opinion time after time has
brought new policies, goals and
methods The individual is not
helpless or caught in "bureau-
cacy” as these extremists
claim.
• They’ll encourage you to
hurl bricks and' stones instead
of logical argument at those
who disagree with your views I
remember an old saying: "He
who strikes the first blow has
run out of ideas." Violence is
an ancient as the cave man. as
up-to-date as the Weatherman
Death and injury, fear, dis
trust, anur isity, polarization,
counter-violef.je — these arise
from violence The very use of
violence shows the paucity of
rational though in the SDS. its
inability to come up with any
intelligent critique of our socie-
ly PERSONALLY, I don't think
the outlook for campus unre.t
this year is as bleak as some
prophets of pessimism proclaim
The si motion at some colleges is
serious, but certainly not hope
less
Along with millions of other
adults. I'm betting on the vast
majority of students who re
main fair-minded, tolerant,
inquisitive, but also firm about
certain basic principals to
human dignity, respect for the
rights of others, and a willing
ness to learn. I am confident
our faith has not been mis-

Activities fair set,
all groups invited
The annual Mortar Board
Fair is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6.
from 1 until 5 p.m. in the Mem
orial Hall ballroom
Each campus organization
has been invited to participate
and will be given space to set
up a booth or table with infor
mation about its activities.
Representatives from each
organization will be available
to talk to interested students
"Mortar Board fair gives
organizations a chance to show
students what they do and why
and it gives student a chance to
see what is available to them on
campus." said Judy I-angford
vice president of Mortar Board
and chairman of the activities
fair.
MISS LANGFORD said Mor-
tar Board members will be
dressed as clowns at the fair
and there will be refreshments
and door prizes donated by
Athens merchants. There is no
admission charge
Any organization which has
not filled out an application to
reserve a space can pick up an
application at the Student Ac
tivities office in Memorial
Hall.
Mortar Board, which is the
highest honor a University
woman can obtain, sponsors trie
activities fair each year as a
service to the campus com
munity.

America's professors are to
blame for destroying the coun
try, said Mrs Martha Mitchell,
wife of attorney genial John
N Mitchell, in a telephone con
versation to a Washington re
porter
“They are totally responsi
ble for the sins of our child
ren," the much talked about
cabinet wife said "The aca
demic society is responsible for
all of our troubles in this coun
try. ' she said "These-are peo
ple that are destroying our
country."
Mrs. Mitchell did pot , name
any particular educa.lpf? but
said she was referring to "the
whole academic society the
professors in every institution
ofleaming."
Her comments were sparked
over a report which qudfed her
husband as calling educators
"stupid bastards who are run
ning our educational institu
tions.”
SHE STATED that if educa
tors had not adopted "a leftist"
political philosophy, "they
would lead the path of Ameri
canism rather than the path of
Communis n."
Mrs Mitchell, irate over the
published report of he'r hus
band's statement at a woman s
press club cocktail party,
called the reporter at Ms home
to voice her comments H
.no'J
A spokesman for the attor
ney general described the re
port a* "distorted and highly
inaccurate."
Mrs Mitchell said College
and university educators”
make rne sick." "They're a
bunch of sidewalk diplomats
that don't know the score," she
said "They don't know what's
going on. They don't have any
right to talk.”
"They are the sidewalk dip
lomats. who do not know and
have no right to express an
opinion on diplomadyf" she
declared. "Why. some of 'em
can t talk as well as I ean and I
can’t talk very well." ....
"There are more repercus
sions in our society today be
cause of them." she said
"They are totally responsible
for the sins of our children The
academicians have not taken
care of our children They are
at fault for a whole generation
of children "
