Whigham says that winning is
not the most important thing
lor Georgia freshman football
Whigham in his second year
at the controls of the Bullpups
could very possibly make Bull
dog supporters happy with his
approach as his charges
clocked a 4-1 mark last season,
and the 15770 edition of the Bull
dogs opened the season against
Tulane last Saturday evening
with four sophomores in the
lineup, including quarterback
James Rav
"WE CONSIDER getting the
kids in the right positions the
most important project ol the
freshman season, Whigham
said "It s not that we don t
consider winning important,
but when you find the pght pos
ition for a boy. you've aided
lum as well as the varsity later
on
We strive to give each boy a
fair chance to play the position
he wants to before any changes
are made, but at the same
time, we require all our players
to play both offense and de
fense
"Our success in this venture
can be documented by the fact
that 90 per cent of last year's
freshmen are playing the same
position on this year s varsity,
Whigham pointed out.
Eighty percent is the figure
we consider passing and will be
working for '
Whigham said that while he
was at Auburn only 50 per cent
of the freshmen ended up in the
same positions as the coaches
were instructed to place the
boys in a position as soon as
possible

The freshmen have been in
camp for three weeks, as they
reported several days after the
varsity started Whigham and
his assistants have 52 boys in
camp. 22 of which are on scho
larship
last week was the first time
that the team had been divided
into offensive and defensive
platoons, as up until then every
one was alternating from offen
se ti defense and vice versa
"We are hampered in our
preparations of the team for
the first game by waiting so
long in letting boys know where
they will be playing, but the div
idends In the end will be worth

"WE HAVE a good repre
sentative schedule, playing a
pair of conference schools
which always have good teams,
two Alantic CoastConference
schools who have continually
been rated highly, and of
course, arch-rival Georgia
Tech in the annual charity
game
"It's my opinion, however,
that we don't play enough
games , he said
Five years ago. the Georgia
freshmen unly played three
games each season
When it was raised to five. I
was hoping we could play Ten
nessee or Alabama or both, but
it wasn't mv decision
"I’m not complaining about
the schedule as it Is set up now
as we are very happy with the
good opponents we play,"
Whigham esplamed
The reason for the abbre
viated schedule is that it is the
first quarter in school for these
players and their grades would
suffer with additional competi
tion
"BUT, IF you'll notice, when
we re not playing, we re prac
ticing every afternoon. And.
look at the basketball fresh
men, they not only play many
more games than we do but
also play a good many of those
games on the road
It was my experience while
coaching in high school that the
football players made their
best giades during the actual
season because they were
forced to discipline themselves
more rigorously." Whigham
said
The Bullpups have "more
size and speed this season than
last year.' but Whigham and
his assistants, Pat Hodgson.
Barry Wilson and Mike Cas-
tronis. are running into a real
problem with a lack of line
men "
