! tudents here at the Univer
sity often find a weekend ap-
proaclung with little planned in
the way of entertainment The
frat isn't having a party, the
University has nothing planned,
the classic city is once again
showing reruns at its local
amusement spots and dorm
jumping has grown monoto
nous
Students with a spirited na
ture and a yearning for excite
ment often take off. leaving
their worries and the restraints
of the University campus be
hind. and set their courses
south by southwest heading for
the Ijttie A s big brother. Atlan
ta.
Amidst a sea of sterile sky
scrapers and endless macadam
a renaissance of the Victorian
past once found in the South's
largest metropolitan area has
been reborn literally down un
der the towering buildings and
and rustic qualities of bygone
Many University students as
well as Atlantans, tourists, and
those simply out for a night of
fun have found a home away
from home in ihe provincial
and msUc qualities of by gone
years characterized in the
mood, decor and atmosphere of
Underground Atlanta
“UNDERGROUND ATljkN-
TA" is the historical city be
neath the streets of downtown
Atlanta When the city first
began, it was the eastern termi
nus of the railroad track to
Chattanooga The city built up
around that terminus, and was
incorporated under a definition
of distances surrounding the
"zero mile post " still found
amongst the tracks in the heart
of downtown Atlanta
The city was destroyed by
lire during the Civil war, and
rebuilt during the latter eight
een sixties, seventies, eighties
and nineties Traffic problems
required the construction of
viaducts which by 1922 elevat
ed the streets making a plat
form one story high above the
original downtown area
By the time construction was
completed all traffic and com
mercial life had moved inevita
bly one floor upwards What
was once the heart of Atlanta
began to atrophy and patiently
await its predestined fate The

theme. He concluded, it is for
this reason that our future
plans have such variety and do
not reflect the same idea

more sophisticated level these
sensual diversions can be
found in Underground, although
one official source slates there
will never be any strip joints in
the Underground area
But if it's a watering hole
you're seeking, there are sever
al stylish places to quench your
thirst Most popular with stu
dents is Ruby Reds Warehouse
for years a landmark in Atlan
ta Characterised by fine banjo
sounds with an occasional oom-
pah. sing along, beer, and pea
nuts. a relaxed jovial atmos
phere is brought about
The Blarney Stone, with an

the wearing of the green and

his way through Atlanta

the project

move to Underground, and per
haps one of the more enjoyable
spots for University Students is
The Wits End Players Their
theater, Gone With The Wits, is
a house of satire and music and
fun This cabaret playhouse,
occupying one of the most in
teresting of all the buildi'igs in
the area, is a re-creation of the
sparkling glittering music hall
of the late 19th century
For the more modern sound,
bordering on Acid-Rock, the
place to hit is Sgt. Pepper's, a
modem discotheque where one
may dance and drink until tin-
wee hours ot the morning
