In the midst of football fes
tivities. marching bands seem
to receive the least of the glory
Thev pracUce for hours, march
in the hot sun and chilling
winds, travel with the team to
give support and perform in the
stands They are a spirit cen
ter They are the Dixie Redcoat
Band
Beginning in June. Roger
Dancz. band director. Phyllis
Dancz. supervisor of the danc
ing majorettes and twirlers and
Abb Dickson, property supervi
sor. organized five original
half-time shows for the coming
season Specific music was
chosen, arrangements were
written and formations were
planned Huey Kent, the new
band director for Clarke Cen
tral High School, worked out
drill sequences for the Red
coats to accompany the music
appropriately
MARCHING 140 strong, the
enlarged Redcoat Band began
practice on the 20th in prepara
tion for the Clemson game.
Dancz said that almost half of
the band are Freshmen Even
the drum major. Clarence
Gooden, represents the fresh
man class He s a remarkably
talented young man. Dancz
said with pride He has a tre
mendous background and is one
of the best in the country
Freshman Cookie French is
the new solo twirler for the
Redcoats Miss French, hailing
from Dayton. Ohio, tried out
for the position against twirlers
from all over the country
OCTOBER 10 is more than
the day of the awaited Ole Miss
game It's "Senior Day.'' In
honor of this years graduating
seniors, the Redcoats will per
form a pregame show, allowing
the seniors to parade during
half-time
This pre-game show will fea
ture such music from the now
generation as Light My Fire
of the Doors fame. Waterme
lon Man and "25 or 6 to 4
recorded by Chicago
On October 17. fans will view
the annual Band Day" show,
featuring approximately 5.000
high school bandsmen and
twirlers The patriotic theme
will include numbers from the

band will be televised on CBS
for the half-time performance
in the Falcon-San Francisco
game on Oct. 4

Services announces the opening
of an office for University stu
dents at the University Health
Services for students receiving
or wishing to receive financial
assistance toward tuition
This office, a State Depart
ment of Education agency,
provides tuition sponsorships to
University students who have a
physical or mental impairment
restricting their vocational
potential These impairments
range from physical impair
ments or residuals therefrom
to environmental discomforts
such as severe allergies and
respiratory ailments
IN ADDITION to tuition
sponsorship, this office will
provide for the eligible student
diagnosis, evaluation and guid
ance services las needed! in
conjunction with the counseling
office at the University Health
Services
At present, there are over
300 students at the University
receiving rehabilitation spon
sorship which includes the pur
chase of books and supplies in
some cases.
Others already enrolled at
the University at their own
expense are eligible and not
aware of it.
THE ONLY strings attached
are: the presence of the im
pairment and the maintenance
of a "C average
This is not a loan and does
not require repayment.

Friday of each week and can be

Jackson prints book
George Jackson, one of the
three prisoners charged with
murder of a guard at Soledad
Prison in California, is the au
thor of a new book to be pub
lished October 15.
Entitled "Soledad Brother
The Prison Letters of George
Jackson." the book will include
an introduction by Jean Genet

known as the Soledad Brothers,
