For years Eric Clapton has
*)een regarded as the best, or
ihe cream, of England's lead
{uiUrists With the release of
us latest album, appropriately
titled Uric Clapton, his repu
tation remains secure
Most of the songs on this al
bum were coauthored by-
Delaney Bramlett and Clapton,
and several of Delaney's
friends sit in as sidemen
There's a whole section of
horns on several of the num
hers, and Leon Kussell contrib
utes his talents on piano
the horns and piano
however, drag down the quality
of the album To enjoy Eric
Clapton one must listen to him
without the distraction of a
Motown-type backing
After Midnight is easily
the outstanding cut Clapton,
organist Hob Whitlock and
bassist Carl Kadle really get
down to it on this one. and the
driving beat fairly knocks the
earphones off your head It's
good hard rock
ON "SLUNKY," an insliu
mental the horn section does
some improvisation before
Clapton comes in to save the
song Blues Power” is another
number ruined by the horn sec
lion, but Clapton s guitar work
and vocals salvage some listenable
moments

“Let it Rain is an undistin
guisheo number until Clapton
lakes off when he starts
whipping his guitar the rest of
the band can go home Clap
ton s vocal talents are utilized
to the fullest on Told You for
the Last Time, where he's
backed up by Rita Coolidge and
Bonnie Bramlett This is a soul
ful song, where Eric sings.

woman enough to take it
A SONG that could have
been done by Cream is Bottle
of Red Wine, where Clapton.
Radle. and drummer Jim Gor
don work together On "Lovin'
you. Lovin me. an unoriginal
love song. Clapton sounds a lot
like he did on the Teasin sin
gle with King Curtis
Bad Boy' features some
more good vocalizing by (.'lap-
ton and competent organ play
mg by Bob Whitlock On one
song. Easy Now. Clapton
switches to acoustic guitar He
also wrote this blues number
AS I SAID before. Clapton
could done without the horns on
his album, but his guitar play
ing makes the whole thing
worthwhile Three of the side-
rnen on this album. Carl Radle.
Bobby Whitlock and Jim Gor
don arc now touring with Clap
ton under the name Derek and
the Dominoes An album will
come from this group soon and
maybe Clapton will realize his
full talents on it

As one freshman University inale was preparing to leave for
si-hool. he d. ^covered his mother packing some of his clothes.
At this partnuiar moment, she happened to be writing in inch
high, capital letters across the front of his jockey shorts his
name, both first and last.
“But Mother. ' he said, •'don’t you think that by the t»me she
gets that far that she'll know my name?"

mother. She had to be placed in a nursing home last month, and
they wouldn't allow her to wear her jewelry any longer "

I wo freshmen girls were overheard discussing their new col

One of the girls remarked, “This is really great, we re in the
same class! We both have political science sixth period, and we
both have Dr. Staff!”
A junior University eo*d had just come in from a date at six
o'clock one morning, and she was getting ready to rack out for
a few hours before her classes began. It was really a come
down to meet a smiling freshman in the bathroom who asked.
"Oh! Do you have a first period too?”

Charlie seems like just an
ordinary beagle puppy — the
kind that kids cuddle and car
toonists make almost human
But until she i Charlie is really
a female i was three months
old. she had a constant throb
bing headache and not much
reason for tailwagging
The mop-eared, big-eared
dog would have died soon be
cause she had hydrocephalus,
sometimes called water on
the brain . had it not been for
neurosurgery at the Universi
ty's School of Veterinary Medi
cine.
Dr John Oliver. Jr. asso
ciate professor of surgery, im
planted a small rubber system
in Charlie's brain that saved his
life and will provide clues to
treating hvdroccohalus in child
ren
THE VALVE system was
made possible by another Uni
versity veterinarian. Dr Albert
Few. It was developed to treat
human hydrocephalics Dr Few
adapted it to fit the require
ments of dogs
The valve system works by
draining excess fluids from the
cranial region to the circulato
ry system. The small rubber
tubing goes from the brain to
the heart, and is constructed so
the fluid can flow only one way
to prevent a back-up.
Such a system can only ar
rest the condition and prevent
pressure from building up said
Oliver. It cannot replace or
correct damaged brain tissue
Even so Charlie's alert and l\
ely nature attests to its pain
solving ability. And. Oliver
adds that dogs who have under
gone successtu! tubing place
ment early have been known to
live seven or eight more years.
THE SURGERY is illustra
tion of research being conduct
ed in nuerologv in Georgia Dr.
Oliver and his associates have
been able to gain valuable
comparative research data on
the brain and nervous system
while helping diseased animals
at the School s clinics
Hydrocephalus is but one
area of this work, which ranges
from treating ruptured discs to
gaining information on spinal
injuries and nervous disorders
Next week the Georgia re
searchers are doing a valve
emplacement operation on
Charlene Beagle They are
trying to improve the treat
ment of hydrocephalus in ani
mals. but they are also seeking
a broader knowledge of the dis
order as it affects humans
The causes of hydrocephalus
are not known but Oliver hopes
to be able to do research into its
hereditary aspects, through the
establishment of a beagle colo
ny with Charlie
"We want to know what
causes it and how we can con
trol and prevent hydrocephal
us.

Regional training center
planned for University
A national study prepared
recently lor the President and
state and federal penal agen
cies concluded that better
trained personnel in the area of
corrections is one of the major
answers to growing crime prob
lems
The University is already
taking steps to help with the
answer
WITH THE help of a *100.000
grant from the Department of
Justice, faculty in the Correc
tions Division of the Institute of
Government here are now plan
ning a regional center of contin
ual education for corrections
Dersonnel
The center, one of only five
in the nation, will train person
nel in six states North and
South Carolina. Florida. Mis
sissippi. Alabama and Georgia
The training program will
emanate from a consortium of
universities in these six states
ABOUT 200 persons in the
Southeast will be involved in
center programs, most of these
being administrators of reha
bilitation policies such as insti
tutional wardens and superin-
lendanhs
Four two-week workshops
and three one-week programs
are currently being planned
Corrections personnel are
being offered fellowships and
scholarships for academic
study at the universities.
CHARLES BISHOP, of the
Corrections Division Staff,
feels that a center of this type
is significant to the modern
concept of law and order
