ROBERT SHAW
Conductor and music director for Symphony
Bell optimistic after
work with addicts
Addiction in a broad sense
by which I mean a harmful
dependence on chemicals, is
one of our most urgent contem
porary health programs
When this dependence is
extensive enough to be harmful
and strong enough to be uncon
trolled it can eventually de
stroy all other interests and
activities - family, business,
social, or community, writes
Ur R Gordon Kell in the pre
face ol his new book. "Escape
from Addiction
After 24 years of experience
working with the problem of
addiction. Or Bell is optimis
tic He states By calling this
book Escape from Addic
tion.' I am trying to emphasize
that there is hope for recovery
and that the days of stigma lad
en labels for chemical depend
ence of whatever kind are being
left behind
This study provides full cov
erage on the effects of alcohol,
as well as a review of the ef
fects of narcotics and other
addicting drugs

he has won the Naumberg
Award in New York and the
Wieniawski Competition in
Poland, and has appeared with
many symphonies, both in the
Crated Slates and in Europe
The Concerto for Two Violins
and Orchestra was written by
Johann Sebastian Bach about
1715 when he was in his Cothen
Period
ACCORDING TO John
Schneider of the Georgia State
University Music Department,
most of Bach's soloes and con-
certoes were written then
The three movements of the
concerto are Vivace Largo ma
non lanto and Allegro
IN A MORE contemporary
vein is the Violin Concerto of
Sir William Walton It was
written in 1939. and first per
formed by the Cleveland or- .
chestra that year
Schnieder calls the piece a
very difficult one for the solo
ist. demanding a great deal of
technical skill in all the move
ments Andante tranquillo.

Walton, a largely self-taught
man. was knighted in 1951 for
his contribution to music He is
generally regarded as one of
the greatest living composers
THE ONLY symphony the
orchestra will do next Tuesday
is Peter Ilyich Tchikovski's
Symphony No 4 in F Minor
This symphony, like the two
coneertoes. was written while
the composer was in his thiri-
ties Andante sostenuto. Andan-
tino in mado di canzona. Pizzi
cato ostinato and Allegro con
fuco are the movements
Tehikovski s Symphony was.
according to Schnieder writ
ten during a particularly diffi
cult time in the artist's life
He had just been advised, after
a severe fit of depression never
to see again his bride he did
not love.
IN ADDITION, he was in
volved with a patroness he nev
er saw At her expense, he
wrote his greatest master
pieces
The introduction is the ker-
oal. the quintessence, the chief
thought of the whole sympho
ny," Tchikovski once wrote of
his Symphony. "This is fate,
the fatal power which hinders
one in the pursuit of happi
ness "
The Atlanta Symphony is one
of the youngest orchestras to
achieve national prominence in
the last quarter century Five
years after it was founded in
1945 the Atlanta Symphony
joined the ranks of the coun
try's 25 major symphony or
chestras Now with Shaw con
ducting. it stands on the brink of
greatness
Nearly 1.000.000 school child
ren have been introduced to
great music by the symphony
which has played over 600 con
certs to audiences totaling over
100.000 annually in Atlanta and
on tours in the southeast
AS THE KEYSTONE of At

If you are a first year Uni
versity student, don’t even
bother to begin reading this ar
ticle First year students are
still a part of that lucky minori
ty The first letter that you
write home to your parents
tells them how wonderful it is
to live right across the street
from Stan's. Hardee's, or the
Kry stall
For that first year you are
quite content to be able to run
right across the street or right
around the comer to get some
thing to eat for your dinner It's
only after this newness wears
off that you realize that you
really don't like, or never did
like. Junior Hunkees. onion

The very thought of walking
into one of your former haunts
almost brings tears to your
eyes It's very true that the cost
to your stomach and your mental
well-being is often very great
IF YOU ARE one of those
lucky people who knows how to
cook, you've got the problem
solved already But how many
people do you know who really
know how to cook? Even if you
do enjoy preparing your own
food it's nice to be able to go
out upon occasion and have a
nice meal
You have a choice of one of
the many restaurants that line
Baxter Street and are also scat
tered throughout the town of
Athens The food at many of
these establishments is often
very palatable, but the check-
