Archie prepares to
invade Athens
By JESSE TULLOS
Staff writer
Has success spoiled Archie
Manning or has the engineering
genius of the Ole Miss Rebels
found enough talented ballplay
ers on his offensive team to
share some of the glory he re
lished in during the 1%9 sea
son’
Last year the talented, red
headed. freckle-faced quarter
back ran lor 14 touchdowns,
passed for nine more and ac
counted for 2.264 total yards
Thus far this season Manning
has been less impressive in
comparison to his total a year
ago. but nevertheless he has
been the tower of strength in
the Rebels success In last Sat
urday's brusing victory over
the Crimson Tide of Alabama,
he passed for three touch
downs, scored two himself and
passed for a two point conver
sion in a 48-22 win
SHARING the spotlight with
Manning are highly regarded
flanker. Vernon Studdard and
Fullback Randy Reed. Both
Reed and Studdard tallied
twice for the Rebels against
Alabama with one of Stud-
dard's scores coming on a 100
yard kick off return
While Archie and the favor
ite sons of the Magnolia State
were making believers out of
Bear Byrant and the rest of the
SEC. the Bulldogs of Coach
Vince Dooley were watching
Mississippi^ heroics on televi
sion
Georgia. earlier, had
dropped a heartbreaker to the
Mississippi State in Jackson. 7-
6, in the first portion of the SEC
double-header
Now 1-2 for the year, the
Bulldogs have to contend with
the fact that Archie and his
army come whooping into San
ford Statium this weekend look
ing for their third conference
victory in as many weeks
IN ORDER TO contain the
high scoring machine from
Mississippi the defensive
charges of Coach Erskine Rus
sell will have to be up again
In Georgia's first three
games, the defense has allowed
only 35 passes to be completed
for 172 yards Overall the oppo
nents have managed only 433
total yards An average of less
than 145 vards per game
While the defense will have
its hands full stopping the brus-
ing Reble attack, the coaching
staff will try this week to find
the sparkplug which will ignite
the faultering offense
The Bulldogs, after shelling
Clemson 38-0 in their home
debut two weeks ago. could
manage only two field goals
against State and managed to
penetrate no closer to its oppis
rents goal than the Maroon s 23
yard line

Veteran lineman from Atlanta had good day blocking against Tigers.
Center looking forward to Ole Miss game
After having lost to Tulane
and Mississippi State, beating
only Clemson. Georgia s foot
ball season seems to be in
doubt The Red and Black
talked with Tommy Lyons to
gel his opinion why Georgia is
in a slump
Lyons, a 6-2. 222 pound senior
from Atlanta, gave these com
ments
"Losing hurts, it hurts any
body. but we can t let it get us
down We have a lot of tough
teams to play and we have to be

Georgia has one of the big
gest games of the season com
ing up this week against Archie
Manning led "Ole Miss' As of
time of the interview. Georgia
had not started to prepare a
game plan After watching the
Alabama vs Ole Miss' game.
Lyons believes that Ole Miss
has a great defense
"They use a variety of defen
sive set-ups and a lot of stunt
ing with the linebackers They
will probably do the same thing
with us."
Lyons made the '69 All-A-
mericar team as center When
asked how he felt about his per
formance so far. Lyons said,
Well. I was extremely dissatis
fied at the Tulane game I felt it
was the worse game 1 ever
played here at Georgia I didn t
feel like I was getting at peo
ple.”
