The Fifth Dimension retur
ned to the University campus
Tuesday night bringing med
leys of their old hits, and inno
vative new songs and a little
rock
Appearing before a large
mot quite capacity i crowd, the
group proved to be the only
group this year to perform for
an audience Don't get me
wrong. I know that other groups
have been here, but the Dimen
sion is the first to realize the
audience was out there to see
as well as hear
After singing two new songs,
the Fifth Dimension began a
medley of l-auar Nyro's songs
that they have recorded or will
record Stoney End” sounded
better than Streisand by five
times. Stone Soul Picnic.
Sweet Blindness Wedding
Bell Blues and Eli's Com
ing” sounded better than they
do on record if you sit in the
right place
I discovered that the best
place to sit if you want to hear
is in the lower corridor of the
south campus cave You can't
the stage at all. but you can
hear fantastically People look
at you rather strangely, but you
get used to that
After much applause the five
began another medley of Jim
Webb's songs As before, they
were better sung in person than
on record
By this time the audience
was really getting into their
music, at least I was Instead of
continuing along the oldie but

Using a strobe light and a little
coaxing the Dimension got the
audience activated and on
their feet clapping The group
came down from the stage and
into the audience immediately
there was a rush towards the
front
A ventriloquist, didn't catch
his name, was very talented
and presented a good opening
act However, someone should
warn groups not to bring come
dians to the University until we
get a decent auditorium with
proper acoustics I caught a
few of his jokes and they were
very funny, but the majority
was lost to the echoes
I enjoyed the Fifth Dimen
sion. they sang for the audi
ence they did something be
sides sing, they performed. I
wish more groups would do
that
goodie vein, they performed a
five-part rendition of Bobby
Gentry's Ode to Billy Joe
Each member took a part in the
song, and unlike attempts at
this before, the transitions
frum one part to another were
quite smooth and flowing musi
cally Even the spotlight made
the transitions as well as the
singers
The show was almost com
plete when they sang Higher,
a Sly and the Family Stone
song They could not capture
the audience enthusiasm that
SI\ did .it Woodstock, but the
Dimension seemed to enjoy it.
After Higher The Fifth
Dimension began to leave, but

man He is interested primarily
in the duality of man. the evil
as well as the good. Many of the
children depict the grotesque

OAKLAND CALIF <UPI»
— Controversy enters into just
about everything the Panthers
do. and its Breakfast for
School children program is
not excepted despite the wor
thiness of its character The
program was started in San
Francisco and Oakland in Janu
ary. 1969. and in its first year
according to Seale, has provid
ed free breakfasts for up to
10.(JOU children
The methods used by the
Black Panther party to obtain
donations of food and money to
sustain this program could
hardly be considered within the
framework of law. Sgt Stan
ley White of the Oakland Police
Department Intelligence Sec
tion told a Senate subcommi-
tee A large majority of the
donations have been the direct
result of extortions on the part
of members of the Black
Panther party wherein the im
plied threats of bodily harm
and or damage to business es
tablishments are made to those
who refuse or are hesitant
about contributing to this pro

we have done. Hilliard said,

THE DEAD ON BOTH
SIDES leave little doubt of the
pohce-Black Panther conflict
In a recent summary. William
C. Sullivan, assistant to FBI
director J Edgar Hoover, said
The call of the Black Panth
ers for positive action in the
form of force and violence
against white society, especial
ly the police, appears to have
stimulated elements beyond
the Panther membership
The officer on the beat lias
borne the brunt of the black
extremists attacks on our so
ciety Since Jan. 1. 1970. there
have been 190 reported inst
ances of racially motived at
tacks against policeman, in
cluding 17 ambushes As a re
sult. 21 police officers have
been killed and 159 others have
been injured. ”
A recent issue of the party
newspaper carried a full page
picture of a black man with a
gun in his hand, captioned:
• Only with the power of the gun
can the black masses halt the
terror and brutality perpetrat
ed against them bv the arme-
racist power structure, and in
one sense only by the power of
the gun can the whole world be

whether the Black Panther par
