Netmen rate tourney trip
By lOB GILLETTE

Coach Dsn Magill is one of
five nominees for
coach-of-the-yetr at the
annual Georgia Athletic Hall
of Fame banquet tonight in
Atlanta.
His name is among the lists
for good reason - his 1971
tennis team compiled a 25-1
dual match record for the
season.
This year’s version of the
Bulldog netmen get under way
this weekend in Princeton,
when Danny Birchmore and
Bob Tams compete in the
third annual Intercollegiate
Invitational indoor tennis
championships Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
It wil be Birchmore’s third
trip to the Princeton tourney
and Tanis’ first. In 1970
Danny reached the singles
semifinals, losing to
Pennsylvania’s John Adams.
The team of Birchmore and
Norm Holmes reached the
doubles finals, losing to
Princeton’s Bill Colson and
Richard Howell.
In 1971 Birchmore won the
singles, defeatmg Colson in
the semis and Adams in the
finals. The Birch more-Holmes
machine took the doubles,
defeating Colson and Harold
Rabinovitz of Princeton in the
finals, as the Bulldogs made a
dean sweep of the courts in
ivy land.
With the graduation of
Holmes, Birchmore and Tanis
have played only two
tournaments as a doubles
team, but won both: 1970
and 1971 Southern
Intercollegiate Invitation
championships.
TANIS EARNED the
number two seed on the
Georgia squad as a result of
round-robin matches held
during the fall.
The ladder stands like this
so far: Danny Birchmore is
the top seeded player in a
shoe-in. Bob Tanis earned the
number two spot by
remaining undefeated in he
fall matches. Carey Browder is
number three
The rest of the lineup
stacks up, (4) Bill Kopecky,
(5) Gordon Smith, (6) Manuel
Diaz, (7) Brent Hughes and
(8) Charley Browder.
The challenge matches will
continue only until the season
begins with the March 4
match against the Athens
Tennis Club, according to
Coach Magill.
“We’ve got a crowd-drawer
coming up on March 6,” said
Magill, “SMU, one of the top
five teams in the nation wil]
be here, and the ma t c h
between Danny Birchmore
and John Gardner, an
Australian who is the National
Amateur Champion on grass,
should be a good one.”
Commenting on Georgia’s
chances in the SEC race this
year, Magill said, “The SEC
race looks good this year. We
won the title last year, but
were not as strong this year.
"Losing Norm Holmes and
Rocky Huffman really hurt
us, but we’ve got a good team
this year. It will be a five-way
race between Georgia,
Tennessee, Alabama,
Mississippi St. and Florida.
“Out of the top five,
everybody but Georgia will be
stronger than last year. It
should be an interesting race
none the less,” he added.

Georgia’s basketballers will
try to get back on the positive
aide of .500 this weekend
when they host Mississippi
and Mississippi State at the
Coliseum.
The Bulldogs’ record has
slipped to 10-11, 6-8 in the
SEC, with three consecutive
losses to Alabama, Tennessee
and Kentucky.
Mississippi will hit Athens
Saturday, with the game
beginning at 8 p.m. There will
be a freshman preliminary at
5:55 p.m.
Georgia beat Ole Miss at
Jackson in January, 80-74.
Monday night's game will
be with Mississippi State, same
starting times. The Starkville
Bulldogs beat Georgia in
overtime earlier this season,
62-58.
Bay Packers and St. Louis
cardinals Tuesday, have
expressed pleasure with the
trade.
Donny Anderson and
MacArthur Lanr-each could
have become a free agent May
1 if terms were not agreed
to-said they were looking
forward to the moves.
“1 just hope I can do the
job St. Louis coaches want
from me,” Anderson said. “I
know I am very excited about
it. I think for all concerned it
will work oU the best.”
Anderson, one-half of the
Packers’ famed “million
dollar” rookie backfield of
1966, had a total offense of
more than 1,000 yards last
season with 757 of them
coming on the ground.

Team, sporting a 3-1 record,
will have their last meet of
the season tonight at 7 p.m.
The contest i*> against Georgia
College and will be held in the
West Wing of the Women’s
Physical Education building.
However, the former Texas
Tech star ended up sharing
the halfback duties with Dave
Hampton and both played

Brockington, who gained
1.105 yards rushing.
He said, “While I’m sorry
to be leaving the Cardinals,
I’m looking forward to joining
Green Bay."
