Classical guitar course offered
Rally troubles
The sports car rally held Sunday by the
Union and the Classic City Sports Car Club
turned out to be a real test of driving,
navigating and mechanical skills, as this
driver shows. The rally course went to
Dillard, Ga. and back, with several
participants ending up in North Carolina.
Winners were Jim Saxon and Vonda Fox in
an Opel 1900. Second were Kathy Davis and
Mary Ann Harrington in a Mercedes 280 SL,
and third were Klwood White and Suzanne
Wise in an Opel GT.
Mysterious paint
won't halt moon
SPACE CENTER, Houston
(UPI) - Engineers who worked
all night on the problem flashed
the word to the speeding
Apollo 16 astronauts Monday
that the mysterious flaking of
paint off their moonship would
not keep them from
attempting a landing in the
moon’s mountains.
The spacemen got the word
about the time they passed the
halfway mark en route to the
moon and just after they
awoke from a fitful first night’s
rest on the 12-day, $445
million mission.
After mission commander
John W. Young and his two
space-rookie companions,
Thomas K. Mattingly and
Charles M. Duke, breakfasted
on orange juice and
sandwiches, capsule communi
cator Anthony W. England
relayed the engineers’ conclu
sions and asked them to look
out the window.
Young, making his fourth
space flight, peered out the
hatch of the command ship
Casper at the side of the moon
lander Orion and reported that
the flakes were continuing to
fly off, but had thinned out
since Sunday night. He

The University’s Music
Department is one of the few
in the United States offering
the classical guitar as a major
instrument, according to
Edwin (ierschefski, head of the
department.
The course, which is limited
to music majors, is taught by
John Sutherland, owner of
Sutherland’s House of Guitars,
3177 Peachtree St. in Atlanta.
•SUTHERLAND was hired
because he is the best in the
area, and because we felt there
was considerable demand for
the guitar here,” said
Gerschefski.
Sutherland studied in the
1966 Master Class as a
performer under Andres
Segovia, known as the greatest
guitarist in the world.

aircraft landed at Chicago and
FBI agents and police arrested
the man who said he was
drifting between jobs as a

Athens two days a week to
teach classical guitar. His staff
in Atlanta sells guitars and
teaches 200 students.
“I bring a lot of students up
here,” said Sutherland. Four of
his students in Atlanta have
come to Georgia this year “to
study the instrument seri
ously.”
“NOT JUST everybody
knows how to play the guitar
correctly. To me the
instrument is a cross between
the piano and the violin. You
can get the solid notes and
chords of the piano and the
vibrato of the violin.”
Sutherland played folk
music at one time but now
specializes entirely in classical
music.
“Classical guitarists play the
melody line, while folk
guitarists usually play accom
paniment for a voice. The
difference lies in their
approach to the music,” he
said.
Sutherland has appeared in
concert, in nightclubs in
Washington, D.C. and Birming
ham, Alabama, on educational
television, at private parties
and “anywhere thev’'l listen ”
“I like the guitar because
you make everything with your
own hands. Everyone gets a
different sound out of the
guitar,” he said.
