Hayes — a master of his
craft
By JAMLS MLSSLNGbR
Shafted we were not. Isaac
Hayes presented an evening
rarely seen on the Georgia
campus these days. This tour
must have been in the planning
stages for some time The show
was very tightly constructed
with musical themes reintro
duced from time to time to
subtly link everything together.
Hayes must work terribly
hard at his craft. The last time
I saw him perform was two
years ago in Atlanta. At that
time he was one of those
pleasant performers with a
good voice and a relatively
small following. What in show
business amounts to overnight,
he has become a giant of a
musician winning a Grammy
Award and an Oscar within a
few weeks of each other.
What’s even more strange is
that he deserved them both. I
don’t know how he did it.
HAYES MASTERY of his
craft is so complete I'm afraid
that a good deal of his music
went literally and figuratively
over the heads of most of the
audience. Some songs, for
example, were based on bits
and pieces from five or six
other songs. His use of styles
ranged from Gershwin to hard
rock - lots of good guitar riffs
for those who like that term.
Quite the showman, the
evening was built up from a
few instrumental numbers, to a
few vocals by Hayes’ female
backup group, then launching
into the "Theme f rom Shaft"
which worked the audience
into a near frenzy. Just when
everyone was convinced Hayes
would burst onstage, out

comes this sultry chick

doing stylized imitations of the
musicians.
WHEN THE audience could
no longer stand the suspense
the girl ran over to the side
Concert review
curtain waving her arms as if to
raise a very spirit into the
world. Out comes Hayes to
tumultuous applause, hiding
his face beneath a hat and an
enormous orange cape.
Hayes finally revealed
himself, dropped the hat and
cape and appeared bare
chested, wearing the most
incredibly orange leotards. He
seemed larger than life itself, a
giant of a man. Lor the rest of
the evening the audience was
his.
Hayes’ show was weak in
one respect. The audience,
more than willing to show its
appreciation, would sense the
end of a number and applaud.
But more times than not the
believed ending to a song was
merely a lull before a final
furious sequence.
WITH SO MANY musicians
in the business just for the
money, it was a pleasant
surpnse to see how much
Hayes enjoyed his music.
Instead of the standard 30
minute "Oh look, now I’ve
seen the star!’’ business, we
were treated to a show that
went on and on and on to the
audience’s delight.
The “favor" the Union was
going to do us all by charging
as for an extra concert, vhich
is now evolving into standard
fare, much like the football
“reserved seat’’ ticket deal, was
worth it this once. Like I said,
shafted we were not. But in the
future . ..

These three young men just made the
discovery of a lif etime. The oldest is 34.
Remember when a young man could get ahead in busi
ness simply by growing old? It was a good system for
those with a little talent and a lot of patience, but today’s
technology moves too fast to wait for seniority.
At Kodak, our extensive involvement in basic research
has made the need for fresh, young thinking more press
ing than ever. So we hire the best new talent we possibly
can Then we do both of us a favor »>«• turning them loose
on real problems, and giving them lom and re
sponsibility they need to solve them
That’s how three Kodak scientists in t’neir eai thir
ties just made a breakthrough in liquid lasers, develop,
ing an organic dye laser with a continuous beam. Their
discovery means mure than just a new kind of laser. It
means a whole range of new laser applications, in fields
from medicine to communications.
It was the kind of discovery most men work a lifetime
for Yet these young men still have most of their life
times ahead of them.
Why do we give young men so much freedom and re
sponsibility? Because it’s good business, and we’re in
business to make a profit But in furthering our own busi
ness interests, we also further society’s interests. And
that’s good.
After all. our business depends on society. So we care
what happens to it.
More than a business.
