Bulldog netters
face Hurricanes
moto by TOM HILL
DANNY BIRCHMORE DOWN WITH VIRUS
Bui you can bet he’ll be in there on Thursday
By BRUCE FINLAND
The end of an era or the
beginning of one? This
question will be answered
tomorrow afternoon when the
fourth-ranted University of
Miami Hurricanes blow into
town for a match with our
undefeated tennis team.
The Bulldogs carry a home
court record of 76 straight
wins into tomorrow’s all
important match with Miami.
But they will be heavy
underdogs to a team that has
lost only once this year, to
second-ranked Southern Cal,
and has the finest tennis
tradition in the South.
On paper, the Hurricanes
look almost unbeatable. Their
ace is Eddie Dibbs, who has a
reputation as one of the finest
players, college or pro, in the
country. Dibbs is a member of
the United States Davis Cup
team, and his play on the
courts this year has certainly
backed up this honor. In fact,
Dibbs has not lost one set this
year in collegiate competition
Also included in Dibbs' list of
victims is Stan Smith. In case
you don't follow tennis very
closely, Smith happens to be
the number one ranked player
in the country.
In the number two position
for Miami is Raz Reid, an
All-American last year. Reid is
also ranked with the top
collegians in the country, and
has beaten Danny Birchmore
on several occasions. And, as if
to add insult to injury’ the
number three man for the
Hurricanes is on the Brazilian
Davis Cup team.
Needless to say, the
Bulldogs have their work cut
out for them. Not helping
matters one bit is the fact that
Georgia’s ace, Danny
Birchmore, has had a virus this
week and may not play. Even
if he does recover in time for
tomorrow’s match he probably
won’t be at full strength.
Dan Magill, Georgia’s tennis
coach, is aware that his team
could be in for a long
afternoon. In evaluating Miami,
he says, “Miami is the strongest
team in the South. Every year
they are one of the country’s
three or four strongest teams.”
Does he think the Dogs can
pull off an upset? “It would be
near impossible,” replied
Magill, “We expect to give
them a good match, though. It
should be a great afternoon for
the fans. They should see some
great tennis." Magill says that
the largest crowd in Georgia
tennis history will view the
match. He estimates that a
crowd of over two thousand
fans will be on hand for the
dual.
For the Georgia players,
this is THE match of the year
for them.
Dogs lose to Tech

UGA sailors make plans
after organizing into club
Coach Jim Whatley's nine seem to be on a
losing track. The BuUdog baseball team lost
three games to Vandy last weekend and
yesterday lost a 6-5 decision to Georgia Tech in
Atlanta to make it four losses in a row. The
baseball team is struggling with a 2-9 SEC
record and a below .500 mark overall. The
Guerin appointed
Hawks' manager
'Dogs met the Jackets last Wednesday in Athens
and beat the insects 3-2. The only reason the
Dog* aren’t in the SEC cellarjs because
Kentucky is there for the moment. SEC
baseball statistics are devoid of any of the
names of the Georgia players in the areas of
batting and pitching.

Hoist the mainsail and get
ready for a spnng that just
might sail right by if the
University Sailing Club has
anything to do with it.
With approximately 25
people in attendance at the
first meeting of the quarter,
Commodore Laurie Gregory
welcomed everyone and
explained a little about the
set-up of the club.
In the past, UGA sailors
have had to rely completely on
the one boat the school owns,
and FJ (flying junior), and any
other boats various members of
the club might own themselves.
This quarter things will be
different because of an
affiliation with the Georgia
Tech Sailing Club. Being
negotiated by go-between Peter
Bakaer, the affiliation with
Tech will make available three
more boats to Georgia’s sailors.
This is the obvious
advantage But additionally,
the affiliation will make it
possible for Georgia to
compete in intercollegiate
racing.
Membership for one quarter
is $7, and this includes free use

of the Georgia and Tech
sailboats on Lake Lanier,
parties, racing, and sailing
lessons for beginners.
All the beginning sailors
will have to pass a skipper’s
test before taking a boat out
alone, but there will be
nuinberous opportunities for
crewing on a boat, which does
not require the rank of skipper.
Vice-commodore Dan
Stephens mentioned a trip
sailing in the Bahamas in June,
and various job opportunities
around Lake Lanier for sailing
instructors as possible benefits
of joining the club.
If any of this pricks your
curiosity in the least, come to
the meeting at 8 p.m. today in
404 Memorial Hall. There is no
restriction on membership.
Members of Tech’s club will be
on hand to answer questions
about the affiliation and you
just might get into something
that will make your spring a lot
more interesting and fun.

ATLANiA (UPI) - Richie
Guerin say« he doesn’t believe
that his adjustment from coach
to general manager of the
Atlanta Hawks will be as tough
as the one he had to make
when he quit playing
basketball.
“That was the one that was
really painful,” the nattily
dressed Guerin disclosed after
Monday’s announcement that
he was stepping up to the front
of flee.
“After all, I had been
playing for about a quarter of a
century - the last 14 years in
the pros — and it was really
tough to get used to sitting on
the bench.”
Guerin’s new appointment
came as no surprise.
