farewell to Hoover
W.OM.E.N.'s speakers reveal
their activities for equal rights
WASHINGTON (UPI)
'The mighty of government and
the public ht* tried to serve so
devotedly bade final farewell
Thursday to J. F.dgar Hoover,
with President Nixon
eulogizing him as “a peace
officer without peer” during
nearly half a century at the
helm of the FBI.
Members of Congress, the
Cabinet, the Supreme Court
and hundreds of admirers
jammed the National
Presbyterian Church to attend
the nationally televised funeral
services for the highly
controversial FBI chief, found
dead at 77 in his home
Tuesday of an apparent heart
attack.
Hoover was buried in a
pnvate family ceremony at the
Congressional Cemetery, about
a mile from the U.S Capitol
where his body had lain in
state for 22Vi hours in an
honor never before bestowed
on a civil servant.
Police estimated that almost
IX.000 persons had filed by
the flag-draped bier before the
casket was moved to the
church Thursday.
In his ll-minute eulogy,
Nixon hailed Hoover as “one
of the giants” in American
history who nearly
singlehandedly built the FBI
into “the finest law
enforcement agency on earth.”

Associate Dean of Student
Affairs Louise McBee told a
group of students Tuesday
night that she plans to attend
the I qual Rights Amendment
Jubilee next Wednesday in
Washington, D C’.
She will represent the
National Association of
Women Deans and Counselors
at the convention
Dean McBcc was one of two
speakers from the women's
caucus of the local American
Association of University
Professors chapter at Tuesday’s
W.O M I N meeting
Answering questions from
the group of coeds, Dean
McBee said the State
Commission on the Status of
Women has not met during
Ciov Jimmy C arter’s term She
is a member of the commission
created under former Ciov. Carl
Sanders’ administration
THE DEAN said she wrote
the governor and received a
reply saying the commission
was active She then contacted
the commission chairman and
learned that the governor had
not initiated any activity for
the commission, so she wrote
the governor again. She
received no reply
The other speaker was Dr.
Barbara McKenzie, an associate
professor in the journalism
school. She discussed the
AAUP’S women’s committees
formed February 11 to
investigate women’s affairs.
The 20 to 2S active members
gather data on how admission,
scholarship, salary and
promotion policies apply to
women, she said.
Dr. McKenzie said the
committees are trying to raise
support to revoke the
University’s nepotism policy.
“The ruling is clearly balanced
against the wife, as her income
is considered supplemental,”
she said.
W O M E N. President Linda
Chafin announced that her
organization is planning to
participate in Saturday's
Abortion Action Week
demonstration. She proposed
starting a day care center with
funds available through the
Model Cities program. She also
told the members that the club
