Nearly everyone has blessed
a cool summer breeze on those
South Georgia scorchers in
July, but this is the first time I
can honestly say I hate the
wind.
I was going to make my first
parachute jump I really was!
- last Saturday, but a United
States Parachute Association
(USPA) ruling states that
first-time jumpers cannot make
a jump if there is more than a
five-mile-an-hour ground wind.
I waited from 10 a m. until
6 p.m. for the zephyrs to
abate, got sunburned, and
nearly starved to death, but
evidently I angered Acolis, and
the winds continued to gust all
day.
THE JUMP field is just
outside of McDonough, and is
operated by the Greene
County Sport Parachute club
(GC'SPAI. It is a beautiful
300-400 acre ex-paslure as
my boots will show covered
with a lush growth of green
grass and surrounded by trees.
J he dub has operated the
field for only two weeks and
has improved the area until it is
one of the finest drop zones in
the South.

ONCE YOU GET there. I
can guarantee you’ll learn
things about yourself you
never knew before I wasn’t
too sure I would he able to do
it, jump from an airplane at
1200 feet that is It was
sometime during Ihe class lhal
I realized I wasn't nervous at
all.
When I suited up and got
ready for my lift (ride up in
the plane) I was shocked to
find how calm I was I knew I
could do it, | was ready; hut
when one of the experienced
jumpers came down from the
lift ahead of mine and did a
twenty-nrile-an-hour nose dive,
the instructors said it was no
go for the students that day
Now I know what athletes
go through when they lose an
important ballgame.

The instruction
is
by
experienced and qualified jump
instructors. The
club
is
sanctioned by the GCSPC and
the USI’A and is subject to all
the rules and safety
requirements. The instruction
is thorough and inexpensive
FOR A FIRST jump
student, the three hour class,
equipment, lift and first jump
costs only $37.50. If you come
in a group of five or more Ihe
rale is $22 apiece. After the
first jump, any jump you make
using Iheir equipment will cost
$6, anil if you have your own
equipment, only $3.
t here are plans to start a
University of Georgia sky
diving club, and more
information will he made
available later about the
Bulldog jumpers. Many schools
in (he area already have clubs,
including Georgia Tech,
Clemson, Valdosta State,
Auburn, Florida State and
others. The GCSI*A plans lo
hold competition between
these clubs in the near future.
Skv diving, anybody? You
never know what you can do
