BULLDOGS PRACTICE IN COLISEUM FOR THE BIG ONE

Netters work throughout
year for team's matches
By K Ell If JONES
Most any sports huff knows
that Vince Dooley prepares his
'Dogs for fall comhat during
the spring and late summer It’s
also pretty common knowledge
that Ken Rosemond and ('o.
are busy during the fall months
readying themselves for the
roundhall season
However, as of late, the
success of Georgia's tennis
team continues to arouse the
interest of students and public
as evidenced by the record
crowd of 3,000 in attendance
for the Miami match. Just what
preparation does Coach Dan
Magill and his squad put in for
an upcoming season?
Dan Magill, tennis coach
here since 1955. has built the
Georgia tennis program into
one of the finest in the country
among the likes of Southern
California, Princeton, and
Miami.
ALONG Willi last year’s
SEC title, the Bulldog netters
have produced 12 straight
winning seasons and a 76-game
consecutive, home-court
victory string Why and how?

the material. However, the
year-round practice schedule
the team uses plays a big role
in its success. Unlike many
college teams, the 'Dogs work
throughout the fall and the
dead of winter in anticipation
of an always tough schedule.
Although Coach Magill's
main responsibility is that of

pre-season. As he puts it. "I

Some hobby Neither Dan
Magill nor the team stop
working when the regular
season ends With the 'Dogs'
future in mind. Coach Magill
handles the Athens Tennis
Club as well as other local
talent in hopes of developing
another Birchinorc. Henry, for
whom Georgia's tennis stadium
is named, was under the direct
influence of Dan Magill in his
pre-Georgia days.
DAN MAGILL is an
example of a disappearing race,

his 'Dogs have posted a ‘>-0

Dan Magill's modesty is
often exasperating to Georgia
tennis fans. When Coach Magill
was asked about his role in the
annual success story of the
Bulldog netters, he simply said.

Do athletes really have it made?
By EMILY STAPLER
Assistant sports editor
Athletes really have a made
don’t they? After all, they have
those “all-e xpense-paid’’
privileges and are just lying
around waiting to get scooped
up by the pros, right? Wrong'
"We had a 60-game schedule
in 10 weeks, that’s six games a
week. We had to pay our board
and food except on road
trips," said Gary Nevinger. who
pitched in the Central Illinois
College League (CICL) last
summer.
“I think I just about broke
even," he continued. "The
Coach (Jim Wasem of
Monmouth College) gets all the
players jobs. I hey usually get
$2 an hour. I guess I was lucky.
I worked in the slaughter house
in the packing section and it
paid $4 an hour.”
THE CICL is "one of the
best" leagues according to
Nevinger. "We had players
from all over the United
States,” he said, "but there
were only three from the
SEC.’’
"Write it on the boys, it’s
them, not me.”
A II-American Danny
Birchmore adds, "Due to our
continuous practice from fall
until the season starts, we
know each other better and
probably have an edge on
schools that don’t practice all
year."
While the squad deserves
and receives all due credit, the
facts clearly indicate Dan
Magill's part in putting Georgia
tennis more than just on the
map. A 25-1 record and a great
shot at their second straight
SEX title in Knoxville next
week are the results of a year’s
hard work by both coach and
team.
ON JUNE 12-17, Georgia
will be the first SEC school to
host the NCAA championships
and only the third Southern
school to host the tournament
in its KH year history. The
tournament is another feather
in Dan Magill's already
bristling, felt hat.
Whether he is conducting a
challenge match for the
number five spot on the
Bulldog squad on a cold,
miserable January day, or
playing a set of tennis with a
10-year-old future Georgia
All-American on July 4, Coach
Dan Magill works to win.

Bruins need
another win
BOSTON (UPI) Coach
Emile Francis admits there’s
only one way his New York
Rangers can make a comeback
against the Boston Bruins: Play
perfect, mistake-free hockey
for the next three games.
The Bruins, who hold a
commanding 3-1 lead in the
best of seven series for the
National Hockey League's
Stanley Cup championship,
need only one more win to
wrap up their fifth title since
entering the league in the
1924-25 season.

The other two were Derek
Bryant, who’s the league leader
in hitting, from Kentucky and
Bill Winshester, who's leading
the league in RBI's, from
Vandy.
Nevinger, who is 4-4 for the
season, admitted he had
problems at the beginning of
the season.
‘‘I was having trouble
earlier this season. I was
striding too far out and it made
me throw high. Now I’m
throwing about 50-50 of
curves, sliders and fast balls.
"I’m pitching loose now. I
was pressing. I was trying to
throw it past every batter. You
just can’t do that,” he
continued.
Nevinger, like Buzy
Rosenberg, thinks his size is an
asset. The difference is
Nevinger is 6-5 to Rosenberg’s
5-7.
"It helps to be tall,” he
grinned, admitting his power to
"intimidate” a few batters.
NEVINGER sides with the
students on the "more-tennis-
courts” issue. "We definitely
need some more. There are
people out there using the
courts until 2 a.m. and the
light comes in our windows
and keeps us awake,” he joked.
Nevinger said he d«*esn’t
mind being called names. “I
like hecklers. It makes me
laugh inside. I’ve been called
everything this year. They
don’t keep it up for long if you
don’t pay any attention."
So come on out to the
South Carolina games next
week and “cheer” the team!
