Author directs children's play
By LESLIE THORNTON
“Directing a play for a
children’s audience is just
like directing for any other
audience," said Dr Faye
Head, author and director
of the children’s play "Tom,
Tom the Piper’s Son’’ which
began Wednesday in the
Fine Arts Auditorium.
This is the ninth
children’s play Dr. Head has
directed for the University
Theatre. She has written c
number of plays, several of
which she produced at
L.S.U where she received
her doctoral degree. She has
also published a number of
senpts in "Plays", a
magazine that specializes in
scripts for children’s
theatre.
The small, dark-haired
woman gives an impression
of being totally at ease with
her environment. She gives
no deep, philosophical
reason for writing children’s
plays. "I began writing plays
for children's audiences
about fifteen years ago,"
she said. "I wrote one for a
"Directing a play
for a children's
audience is just
like directing for
any other
audience.’'
playwriting class. I liked it.
For me, it is easier and more
fun."
MOST OF Dr Head’s
plays are original. They are
based on legends or fairy
tales "Tom, Tom" is based
on a three line nursery
rhyme. Other plays that she
has produced include "Alice
in Wonderland,” "The
Wizard of Oz,” and “Winnie
the Pooh."
How about a play with a
message? She dismissed the
question with, "There are
no real messages in the plays
I am involved with. 1 just
have fun with them.
However, if you do write or
direct a play that has a
message, the message must
be there for the children to
understand it."
Dr. Head has never acted
in a play for children. Her
primary concern has been
directing. "We cast a
children’s play as we would
any other play - by open
audition. If there are
children in the play as there
are in "Tom, Tom," we
have a special audition for
them.”
“WE TRY to cast
children eleven or twelve
years old or older. They are
treated like the other actors,
and they must be just as
disciplined. It’s hard on
them with the long
rehearsals," she said.
Asked if the children in
"Tom, Tom," were awed by
"The main thing
you have to
remember with a
children’s audience
is that the children
are more willing to
believe and
accept."
the older cast members, she
laughed and said, "Not with
this group! ’ She added that
she has had success with the
Athens children in the cast.
One special problem in
working with children is
getting spontaneity, Dr.
Head said. "Adults are more
spontaneous. When you
have children in a
memorized situation such as
a play, the memorization is
much more obvious. You
have to work to get the
spontaneity."
"The adult actors in a
children’s play, however,
just take it as another play,"
she said, "They approach it
as they would any other
character.”
"Quite often, a children’s
play is a fantasy world that
you just have to make real.
A play of this nature is
harder to do because it is
more active.”
“Tom, Tom" will be
performed today at 3 p.m.
and 8 p.m., and on Saturday
there will be a special
maiinee at 10:00 a.m.
Tickets are SO cents for
matinees and S2.00 for the
evening performance for
adults and SO cents for
children.

The Athens Recycling
Project celebrated its first
birthday yesterday.
“The project is doing very
well after its first year of
operation," J. B Deal,
superintendent of Athens’
sanitation department, said
Wednesday. The department is
in charge of collecting
newspapers for recycling.
"Students, as well as
residents, have participated in
the project," Deal said.
Support of the recycling effort
seems to be increasing in
Athens, he said.
Although it is a one-man
and one-truck operation. Deal
said between SO and 60 tons of
newspapers have been picked
up each month from the 10
collection stations around the
city.
The papers are then carried
to the Austell Box and Board
Company near Atlanta, and are
recycled back into newsprint. I
Two collection points are
on campus - one in the lobby
of Brumby Hall and one in the
center of the married student
housing complex.
Other stations are: Colonial
Store on Alps Road; Gibson’s
Discount Store on Hawthorne
Avenue; Kroger Store on
Prince Avenue, old First
National Bank Building on
Oconee Street and the
Magnolia Service Station on
North Avenue.
