Schools
to give
awards
The traditional formal
convocation on Honors Day
will not be held this year,
according to Ted Hammock,
assistant to the Vice President
for Instruction.
Revised plans call for a Red
and Black supplement May 17
listing students graduating in
the top five per cent of their
class, those receiving awards
and those being tapped into
honor societies. A formal
brochure containing the same
information and a
congratulatory letter from
President Davison will be
mailed to each of the students
listed.
"Today’s average student
9eems not to be interested in
formal convocations, despite
our efforts to drum up
attendance," Hammock said.
"It would be more significant
to them to honor them in a
publication like The Red and
Black."
The formal convocation
service, suffering from low
attendance in recent years, had
long since dispensed with
individual name recitation and
recognized students in groups.
"Each school and college is
handling its own awards in
some overt manner. It’s
probably more meaningful to
the student - it’s more
individual,” said Dr. Joy
Williams, assistant to the
director of the Honors
Program.
Hammock said the change
in plans had been
communicated to the Student
Government Association and
drew protest from them. He
added that the present plan
was only on a trial basis.
The office of the vice
president for instruction has
received only one call inquiring
about the plans for Honors
Day, Hammock said.

Liberal ideas conflict—Harris

Arch-segregationist Regent
Roy V. Harris is not in favor of
integration, a large minority
vote or students voting where
they go to school.
In tact, Harris sees the
current suit against the Regents
by the Fort Valley registrar as
the conflict of two major ideas.
(The suit has been filed by
W K. Avery, the Fort Valley
registrar, against the individual
members of the Board of
Regents. The suit charges the
Regents with failing to assign
white students to Fort Valley
State College and making it a
racially definable, i.e. black,
institution. In other words, he
is upset about the black
students and blacks in the
community outnumbering the
white voters.)
HENRY NEAL, executive
secretary of the Regents, said
the suit used a “rather novel
approach" in dealing with the
problem of segregation there.
“Two liberal theories for
minorities are in conflict here,”
Harris said.
He said the liberal idea of
not lessening the voting
strength of the minority would
directly confront the problem
of segregation. If the school
were integrated fully, it would
weaken the black vote in the
area, if students register in Fort
Valley.
“The courts are getting a
little more sensible,” Harris
said. He predicted the courts
would keep running into
“conflicts like this.”
“When you try to cut
through social relationships,
you’ll keep running into
conflicts,” Harris said.
“It’s kind of fun watching
these folks.”
Harris said there could be
many problems with students
registering to vote where they
go to school. He is especially
afraid students will try to vote
both where they go to school
and back home where their
uncle is running for the county
commission.
change ms residency tor four
years, then that’s all right,” he
said. But he still said he just
didn’t think students ought to
register to vote where they go
to school.
“Georgia State is better
(than the University) this
thing of residency is a matter
of intent for most people.”
Harris said he worked for
passage of the 18-year-old
voting law when he was
Speaker of the Georgia House
of Representatives.
Since then, he said the
18-year-olds had not voted any
differently than anyone else.
“I have never been able to
notice any change in the voting
pattern,” Harris said.
