Ms Elizabeth Murphey,
Georgia's coach, felt that the
team could have played better,
but realized that they faced
some tough competition
“We didn’t play badly, its
just that our opponents were
some very higly skilled girls,"
she said.
Coach Murphey remark* *
that the Furman team was
“one of the nicest groups of
girls we’ve ever played ”
She also commented that
the course at F.S.U. was very
flat, and in “extremely bad
shape," saying that Georgia has
“one of the best golf courses
that the team had played on all
year."

Georgia Judo Club gave 12
of their newly ranked yellow
belts their first taste of
tournament competition
Tuesday night in a spirited
intraclub competition at
Stegeman Hall The advanced
judokas (judo players)
competed separately.
Capturing the first place
medal in the lightweight
beginners division was junior
Bntt Pnddy. Second place
went to Rollin Mathis An
equally hard-fought battle in
the heavyweights resulted in
Peter Mallory winning the
top-ranking medal and Charles
Leonard placing second.
In the advanced division,
brown belt Tom Beck was the
surprised first place winner.
"The only reason 1 came down
to the gym was to watch my
girlfriend compete," he said,
“and then the girls didn’t even
play "
THE HIGHEST ranking belt
participating, Beck's total
points were below those of the
two green belts, two orange
belts and one yellow belt in the
advanced competition.
Tournaments are run on a
five, point system. Roughly,
when a player is beaten, he
receives points. A total of five
points means elimination from
further participation. In order
to give each player a chance to
play every other member of his
weight class in Tuesday’s
tourney, these rules were
slightly stretched, and the
player with the lowest total
points became champ.
The tournament was held in
conjunction with the
beginners’ class graduation into
the Georgia Judo Club, and
marked the final beginners’
class of this chool year. The
class had been meeting
Tuesdays and Thursdays from
6-7 p.m. at Stegeman, with the
club meeting from 7-8 p.m. A
new beginners’ class will be
offered Fall and Winter
Quarters. Details will be
announced later.
The University will be
invaded by large numbers of
Junior College athletes on
Monday and Tuesday when
Georgia hosts the state Junior
College tennis and golf
tourneys.
The tennis tourney begins at
9 a.m. at Henry S. Feild Tennis
Stadium with singles
competition. Doubles
competition is scheduled to
begin at 1 p.m.
The tourney is free of
charge and open to the public.
Schools participating will be
Brunswick Junior College;
DeKalb College. Gainesville
Junior College, Middle Georgia
College. Emory at Oxford;
Young Harris, and the tourney
favorite; Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College
Sophomore Sam Stovall of
Young Harris is the defending
singles champion. He will be
the underdog, however, to
ABAC’S Steve Pierre, of
Panama, who is 24-0 for the
year and has defeated Stovall
twice in onference
competition.
ABAC is also favored to
take the doubles crown with
the team of Pierre and Giiver
Scott.
The golf tourney will take
place at the University Golf
Course. Tee off time is 9 a.m.
both Monday and Tuesday.
Linksmen seek fourth
The University of
Georgia golf team tries to
make it four championships
in a row as they compete in
the annual SEC tournament
this weekend. May 12=14,
at Callaway Gardens.
Golf coach Dick Copas
has said, "Whether we win
the title or not will depend
on the shooting of our two
freshmen, Mike Fambrough
and David Canipe."
Besides Fambrough and
Canipe, Copas will enter
seniors Lyn Lott and Danny
Yates, sophomore Bill
Kratzert, and freshman Bob
Young in the 54-hold
tournament in which >he
low five scores for each
team will count.
