President Nixon's decision to
mine North Vietnam’s harbors
was a defensive measure based
on a calculated judgement of
how the Russians would react,
Sen. David Gambrell told a
street corner audience in
Athens Saturday.
Agents raid
stills
LAGRANGE, Ga. (UPI) -
State revenue agents and Troup
County authorities raided and
destroyed a cluster of six illegal
"moonshine” stills near here
Monday.
Two men were arrested in
connection with the raids.
Thev were identified as
Franklin Carl Maddox, 21, of
Atlanta and Judge Hill
Woodyard, 40, of near
LaG range.
Agents identified the stills as
five 800-gallon capacity units
and one 600-gallon still, all of
the groundhog type. Also
destroyed were 3,000 gallons
of mash.
Gambrell also discussed his
views on the status of the
senatorial race and his reasons
for agreeing to act as a speaker
for the presidential campaign
of Gov. George Wallace.
GEORGIA’S junior senator
was visiting Athens as a part of
his campaign for the re-election
to the senatorial position to
which Gov. Jimmy Carter
appointed him last year.
GambrelTs comments came at
a combined rally/press
conference at the downtown
Varsity.
‘‘I hope for withdrawal and
rapid withdrawal of troops,”
Gambrell said. He added that
he was opposed to putting
more troops back in Vietnam.
Concerning the senatorial
race, Gambrell said that most
people had not begun to make
up their minds about the
candidates yet. He noted that
the main issues of the
campaign would be the war,
the national economy, welfare
reform and the busing issue.
GAMBRELL said that his
platform was centered around
the need to take the load off
the workingman’s back.
Gambrell stated that his
agreement to speak in the
Wallace campaign reflected an
endorsement of issues rather
than of Wallace himself.
Gambrell said he had not yet
decided who he would support.
Asked if Wallace would
accept the vice-presidential
nomination if he got it,
Gambrell said that he thought
Wallace would rather not be on
the ticket than take half-way
measures.

says candidate Russell
ATLANTA (UPI)
Democratic senatorial
candidate Lloyd Russell says
that Sen. David Gambrell
apparently is not interested in
the working man and consumer
protection measures.
In a statement issued Sunday,
Russell also branded Gambrell
as a “hypocrite of the first
order.”
said he thought it was “asinine
to get hung up on that. I do
not depend on anyone. I have
reported my financial
statement twice and if a man
can get elected on such an
issue, God help the country."
He also said he had not missed
any key votes in the Senate
which “would have made any
difference."
Gambrell said he would talk
“commonsense and not
nonsense about the issues.”

“The appointed senator’s
claim to fame is his ‘working
man’s bill of rights’," Russell
said. “I maintain he has no
interest in or knowledge of the
working man’s needs.”
“Further, I maintain he is a
hypocrite of the first order.
This past April at least five
consumer protection measures
came to a vote in the Senate.
He was either jhsent or voted
present without voting yes or
no. In effect, this was a no
vote.
"He has stated he will only
vote on important issues so
obviously he does not consider
consumer protection an
important issue.”
Gambrell denounced
accusations made by some
opponents as “false" and a “lot
of nonsense."
