72-73 schedule announced
Cagers will have it rough
Georgia Athletic Director
Joel Eaves announced last
week the 1972-73 Georgia
basketball schedule, considered
the toughest in head coach Ken
Rosemond’s eight years at
Georgia.
Thirteen home games in the
Georgia Coliseum are on tap,
with the home and season
opener scheduled for the night
of December 2, against the
College of Charleston. Since
the Georgia-Georgia Tech
football game will be played
the afternoon of December 2
in Athens, the Georgia-Charles-
ton game will give the Georgia
sports fan the unique
opportunity of seeing two
varsity games in one day in this
unusual doubleheader.
THE BULLDOGS will
participate in the rugged
Quaker City Tournament in
Philadelphia, December 27-SO.
The tournament features a very
impressive line-up of teams,
such as New Mexico State,
Southern California, LaSalle,
Princeton, and St. Joseph’s
among its eight teams. Georgia
will play two games at least in
Philadelphia, with the
possibility of a third due to the
winner-loser bracket set-up of
the tournament. The Bulldogs
participated in the 1969
Quaker City affair.
Single game non-conference
opposition is highlighted by a
meeting with powerful North
Carolina State, featuring the
nation’s tallest player in 7-4
Tommy Burleson. State
defeated Georgia last season
but fell to the ’Dogs in Athens
two years ago.

most valuable player in this
year’s Stanley Cup playoffs,
was released f rom

against Russia.
Orr told a news conference
at the hospital Monday he felt

“day-to-day" improvement in
his damaged left knee.

Georgia head basketball
coach Ken Rosemond, with an
eye toward a 1973-74 season
which will leave him without
the services of six seniors-to-be
next year, recently announced
the signing to a grant-in-aid of
Doug Miller, a 6-5 forward
from Camden County Junior
\ College in New Jersey.
Ineligible for the 1972-73
season upcoming. Miller will
loin 6-5 guard Ed Peterson in a
B-team capacity next year and
will take the varsity floor as a
sophomore in ’73-74.
The 200-pounder from
k Haddon Heights, New Jersey,
entered Camden Junior College
last year after an outstanding
career at Haddon Heights High.
Miller made his mark in his
first year at Camden, winning
the rebounding title of the
Garden State Athletic
Conference on 15.8 caroms per
name and ending as the GSAC’s
second leading scorer on 25.6
points per game.
Miller set season records at
Camden for most field goals
(276), most rebounds (411)
and most points (666) in a
total of 26 games.
“Doug is a strong rebounder
and excellent outside shot."
commented Coach Rosemond.
He will play the corner for us
and will fit in nicely with out
program along with Ed
Peterson for ’73-74 sinus we
graduate so many seniors after
the next season." Rosemond
added.
underwent surgery to remove
cartilage fragments on June 6.
Dr. Carter Rowe. who
performed the surgery, said Orr
would wear a posterior splint
for the next two weeks and
then use a special knee brace
during July and August and
“possibly through the first week
or so of training camp in
September."
SEC opponents in on the
line-up, and with the ever
increasing quality and balance
in the league the SEC war
looms even more imposing for
1972-73. Kentucky, Tennessee,
and Alabama represent the
pre-season cream of the league.

improved Georgia Tech are set

presented to Birchmore in a

Birchmore, who has led
Georgia to two straight

trophies would fill volumes
during his Bulldog career. More
notable among his titles are the
SEC No. 2 singles crown in
1970, the SEC No. 1 singles
title in 1971, the SEC No. I
doubles crown (with Norman
Holmes) in 1971, the Southern

assured by virtue of his 1972

NCAA finals.
Birchmore is the first tennis
player to be awarded the
Outstanding Senior Athlete
award.
