The list of essentials for
college students has grown by
one recently. Along with an
alarm clock, telephone and
change for the various
machines around campus, the
popcorn popper has proved
itself to be indispensible to
existence.
The popcorn popper is one
of the most versatile utensils a
college student owns. It can be
used to warm muffins, cook
soups, fry meats, or for a
variety of other purposes. Of
course, you can always cook
popcorn in it.
There are a wide variety of
poppers and most are
inexpensive. Before using any
popper, or any electric utensil,
read the instructions and
follqw directions for
“pretreatment.”
Necessary “accessories” for
cooking with a popper:
potholder, to tilt the
cornpopper so you can pour
out soups or slide out meats;
spatula or turner; vegetable oil
or fat, for use in cooking this
is preferred over butter or
margarine because it does not
begin to burn and smoke as
rapidly.
BREAKFAST mbled
eggs and ham for ,ie.
ingredients:
luncheon meat
2 eggs
milk
salt, pepper
2 tsp. cooking oil
Add oil to popper and let it
heat until water “jumps” on
surface. While the popper is
heating, beat eggs, add milk,
salt, and pepper to taste. Shred
the luncheon meat and add this
to egg mixture and pour into
the popper. Stir gently but
constantly until eggs are
cooked as desired. Be careful!
The popper cooks very rapidly.
When he egg is cooked, lift
with spatula or slide out.
Anything you like may be
added to your eggs. Cheese,
mushrooms, peppers, or
imitation bacon bits are a few
suggestions.
Boiled eggs - Fill popper
halfway with water if using
two -eggs. For each additional
egg add about x /i c. water. Do
not let the water reach too
near the top of the corn
popper. Heat water to boiling
and then unplug the
cornpopper. Put eggs gently
into the water and cover with
the top.
Soft cooked - let stand 3-7
minutes according to
consistency desired.
Hard cooked - Let stand
20-30 minutes
The eggs may also be cooked
by placing them in water and
heating the water until it
begins to boil. After the water
boils, unplug the popper,
cover, and let stand until
desired consistency is reached.
LUNCH Pranks n Beans
for one.
ingredients:
frankfurters
baked beans
Heat the popper with one
Tbsp. cooking oil. Slice open
two hotdogs and brown in the
oil. When they have reached a
desired browness, add a can of
baked beans or pork n beans.
Stir constantly so the beans do
not burn. After the beans have
heated, unplug the popper and
enjoy.
Hot dog and steamed beans
with corn on the cob for one.
ingredients:
hot dogs
beans
corn on the cob
Fill the popper about 54 full
with water. Open the can of
beans and set the can in water.
If necessary, pour out some
water. As long as the can is not
damaged it is safe to cook in it.
Cut corn in half and add to
water; add hot dogs. Cook 6-10
minutes.
SUPPER - Ground beef
dinner for four,
ingredients:
1 lb. ground beef
packaged dinner
Brown the ground beef in
the popper, and add any
desired spices. Pour off any
excess fat. Add any one of the
mixes on the market
Pillsbury’s “Hamburger
Helper,” Hunts’ “Skillet
Dinners” or Chun King's
“Skillet Dinner.” They offer
everything from stroganoff to
bar-b-que to chow mein. These
usually feed four. If there is
some left over, refrigerate and
use within one week.

four.
ingredients:
2 Tbsp. shortening or oil
1 lb. ground beef
2 Tbsp. chopped onion
Va c. bread crumbs or cornmeal
3 Tbsp. hot water
314 c. tomato soup or sauce
7 oz. package spaghetti-
uncooked
I tsp. salt
Yt tsp. pepper
Preheat popper with
shortening or oil. Mix meat,
onion, bread crumbs and
water. Form into 12 balls and
brown in fat. When meat is
brown add tomato soup or
sauce, salt, pepper and the
spaghetti broken up. Let cook
about 15 minutes or until
tender. Stir occasionally so the
meat does not stick
OTHER USES:
Quicky breakfast Place a
breakfast pastry into popper,
cover, and let it heat for 3-5
minutes. Any prepared
sweetroll, muffin, or biscuit
may be heated in the same
manner.
Easy lunch canned soups
may be heated in a popper
Add soup to popper and
desired amount of water. It
will take from 3-4 minutes to
become heated. If you are
using a soup that does not need
water, leave it in the can. Fill
the popper about Vi full,
depending on the size of the
can. Place the can in the water
and let the water come to a
boil. The water must boil for a
while before the soup becomes
heated. This method takes
longer but the clean-up job is
easier, especially if your
popper is not immersible.
This method may be used
with any canned goods.
Vegetables, chile, hash,
bar-b-que, or macaroni and
cheese are a few example*'
More than one may be heated
at once.
One word ol caution do
not fill the popper too high
with water because the water
may boil over into the cans.
