New zones,
open streets
By DAVID BROWN
Reduced summer traffic on
campus has relaxed some park
ing restrictions prevalent
Spring Quarter. Zones G, L, C,
H, I, X and E are now open to
parking for any vehicle with a
current University parking per
mit.
AU other lettered zones
require valid, corresponding
permits. New maps displaying
changed summer parking prior
ities are available at the Public
Safety Division Police Depart
ment, near Stegeman Hall.
Other changes include the
opening of Sanford Drive to
general traffic throughout the
day. In the past, when the
school operated at peak enroll
ment, double-parking car pool
ers and excessive pedestrian
traffic in the Memorial Hall area
produced so much congestion
that shuttle busses could not
meet their schedules.
This forced the closing of
Sanford to automobiles from
Baldwin Street to Field Street
during class hours. For the sake
of pedestrian safety the Traffic
Committee has recommended
that the ban apply to motorcy
cles when the street is closed
again this fall, according to
Marvin Van Vleck, manager of
traffic safety division.
Until recently students have
parked in a triangle formed by
the intersection of Thomas
Street, Fulton Street, and
Spring. Blockage of rail and
bus traffic has caused this
property to be posted and
students should be warned that
unauthorized parking on rail
road property in this area may
result in the familiar tow-away-
at-owners-expense trick.
Twenty dollars retrieves one’s
car.
The most common traffic
violation committed on cam
pus is the parking of unregister
ed vehicles, according to Van
Vleck. All vehicles operating
and parking on the University
campus are required to register
and display a parking permit,
which can be obtained at
Public Safety Department.
Unregistered violators are
traced through the state. Col
leges and universities through
out the nation cooperate in
identifying owners of vehicles
registered in their respective
states even though the car may
not bear any campus regis
tration.
Candidates shift plans
Connie Brown and Steve
Patrick, University students
and candidates for Athens City
Council, have decided not to
run in the August Democratic
Primary.
Brown and Patrick will in
stead run as independents in
the November General Elec
tion. The candidates felt the
postponement would provide
them with more time to
prepare for the election.
Brown is running for the
Fourth Ward City Council
position and Patrick is conten
ding for the position in the
Third Ward of the City Coun
cil.
SHADED AREAS ARE CLOSED LOTS, OPEN ONLY TO PROPERLY REGISTERED CARS
