Where Bob Hope left off
Jane Fonda begins, only Jane
Fonda has more purpose to her
entertainment than laughter.
Ms. Fonda was in Atlanta
Friday and talked with The
Red and Black about her
soon-to-be-released film,
“F.T.A.,” which stands for
Free The Army.
Along . with Donald
Sutherland, Len Chanter, Dick
Gregory and other entertainers,
Ms. Fonda toured bases in the
United States and overseas
entertaining the troops. When
not entertaining, they
interviewed the soldiers to find
out their feelings about
fighting the war and
army, treatment. The shows
and interviews were made into

“WE TOURED bases in
Hawaii, Okinawa, the
Philippines, Japan and
stateside,*’ Ms. Fonda said.
“The shows have been in
response to the already
well-established Gl
movement.”
The group did sketches,
songs, readings and skits that
the soldiers expressed a desire
to hear.
“We gave the soldiers what
they suggested through over 80
anti-war papers,” Ms. Fonda
said. “The soldiers decided

WHEN ASKED about the

planet off his throne.”
She did say that she would
vote for McGovern, but added
“The President’s race is like
deciding between two
corporate heads as to who will
run the company.”

“Bob Hope isn’t using his
talent wisely by making jokes
about the South Vietnamese
women . . and exploiting the
women he has on his show,”
the activist replied when asked
if her show was similar to
Hope’s.
They ran into varied
obstacles trying to get to the
troops. The tour wasn't
allowed on any of the bases.
“In Japan, visas were denied
through U.S. State Department
prompting,” Ms. Fonda
informed.
“SOLDIERS WERE told
that there would be cameras at
the show taking pictures of
them if they showed up,” she
continued. “But the soldiers
still came."
According to Ms. Fonda, the
trips heightened her awareness
of the necessity of making
films “for the other side” - to
show the repression of
individuality and the cultural

policies of the armed forces.
