By PHIL SANDFRLIN
I he old Alfred Hitchcock is
back! Not the pale imposter of
the last few years who ground
out such tepid films as “Torn
Curtain” and “Marnie,” but
the genuine old master of
suspense and mayhem who
made “North By Northwest”
and “Psycho” complete with
the excellent plotting and wry
humor. He has made “Frenzy.”
For a while it was feared
that Hitchcock had lost his
touch. Thank Cod this isn’t
true. Going back to London to
make this film was therapeutic
for Hitchcock. There must be
something in the same fog that
Agatha Christie breathes that
reminded Alfred that he wasn’t
just another filmmaker. This
taut thriller is a gripping and
beautifully paced film that has
to warn them. This principle
works very well here. Before
the film is half over, the viewer
knows which of the characters
is the maniac who’s been
strangling young girls. As he is
watching, the wrong man is

accused and convicted of the
crimes. The suspense is just as
great, and in true Hitchcockian
form, there is an unexpected

to be seen to be really
appreciated.
HITCHCOCK once
remarked that real suspense
isn’t just trying to guess the
murderer’s identity, but seeing
a danger that the actors are

THE COMIC relief is
supplied by a funny Scotland
Yard inspector who'., starving
to death on his wife’s awful
cooking. Hitchcock truly
knows how to use humor to
regulate the pace and
compliment the mood of a
film.
Like any good Hitchcock
film, this is a satisfying
cinematic experience. No
messages, no deep thoughts, no
obscure symbolism, nothing
hut the entertainment of the
film’s action. The true
craftptanship of this film is
taat you don’t realize until
later just how well done it was.
Nothing interferes with the
total impact.
Welcome back, Mr.
Hitchcock. We’ve missed you,
and it’s good to see you return.
