Rolling Stones in Tuscaloosa
The hassles were many
concerning the Rolling Stones
concert last Wednesday night
in Tuscaloosa. As we swayed
along at four a.m. on a narrow
Alabama two-lane approaching
Heflin and bitterly cursed the
vague highway markers, the
incredible traffic foulup in
Birmingham and the University
of Georgia for holding classes
the day after a Stones concert,
it was enough to make even
hardened Stones veterans
wonder if it was all worth it.
But, after a day's rest, the
nightmarish ambience of the
gig diminished and an
improved outlook was possible.
The Rolling Stones were
MICK JAGGER
Blew kisses, tossed rose petals
introduced at Auburn in 1969
as the greatest rock and roll
band in the world. They
proved it thatnight and they
proved it again last Wednesday ;
it’s as simple as that.
Passing through Heflin
(Alabama’s infamous
hippie-trap), we saw their cops
making an illegal search of a
Mustang driven by longhairs;
nervous jokes seeped through
the car as we got through
unscathed. Memorial Coliseum
was jammed far past its 16,000
capacity by seven p.m.,
stifling hot and full of smoke.
Thwarted scalpers offered
tickets outside as low as three
dollars.
After a bureaucratic ordeal
to secure press passes there
were none at the gate and we
only got in by the benevolence
of a freak security person
our photographers were not
allowed to carry cameras
inside. Photographic
equipment was smuggled in but
we were forced to sit on
concrete steps too far away
even for long lens.
The show began promptly at
eight with two awful songs by
the Dorothy Norwood Singers.
Chip Monck's stage,
incorporating backlit mirrors,
worked beautifully, as did his
sound system most of the
night.
Stevie Wonder went through
an ordinary set and Mick
Jagger pranced onstage at 9:40
with a “Whoop!” and the
Stones broke into “Brown
Sugar,” very ragged and loose.
The band was less colorfully
dressed than in ’69, with Mick
Taylor and Charlie Watts
wearing Red Tongue T-shirts.
Except for Jagger. Sporting
diamond bracelets on both
wrists, a ruby sequin on his
forehead, a purple-and-white
jockey cap, skintight pants and
top open to the navel, t-h-e
rock idol dangled his wrist at
the crowd, scowled and
sneered, spun round and round
and leaned the mike over,
wailing through the applause as
a nearby female smiled “You
can see his penis plain as day
The band slowly came
together through “Gimme
Shelter,” “Happy” and
“Tumbling Dice” as Nicky
Hopkins added piano and
Bobby Keys and Jim Price
came in on horns. Jagger’s
harmonica introduced “Love in
Vain” and Mick Taylor stole
the song with some absolutely
searing slide guitar. Curiously,
Keith Richards held far back
all night, only doing rhythm
and brief lead spurts. Bill
Wyman stood motionless out
of the lights, playing
barely-audible bass.
They began to boil on
“Sweet Virginia,” ended with a
hilarious a capella duet
between Jagger and Richards.
We saw parallel Hell raised in a
long jam inside “Midnight
Rambler” and the Stones
churned on to “Johnnie B
Goode,” Jagger slithering
across the stage, hunching a
tom-tom, spinning incarnate
evil, nut-rock; the crowd was
entranced.
As they drove home “Street
Fightin’ Man” and the last
pumping bars soared, Mick
Jagger jumped into the air,
blew kisses, tossed rose petals,
teased the audience with h
cap, and disappeared. Th
sweaty bodies moving outst
into the rain looked like they,
been beaten with a wet toweT

Experimental drinks add spice
’92 W Broad St.

By BARBARA PEELE
The memorable weekend in
July has just passed in Georgia
with quite a bit of celebration
and more than a few
hang-overs. Many young people
between the ages of 18 and 21
went to the liquor stores, bars,
and dubs legally for the first
time.
What did most order to
lrink? Probably the old
faithfuls such as: rum and
coke, whisky sours, daiquiris,
scotch and water, and
screwdrivers to name a few.
These are all good drinks, but
with the summer season and
the lowered drinking age this is
a good time to experiment and
broaden your drinking tastes.
Here are some great drinks
for this hot weather.
Vodka Gimlet
3 ounces vodka
1 ounce lime juice
Yi tsp. sugar
Shake or mix in blender
with ice. Serve with lime slices
or black olive.
Peppermint Martini
2 jiggers vodka
touch of vermouth
peppermint schnapps
Mix well and serve over ice.
Lemonade Slush
1 6 oz. can lemonade
1 cup rum or vodka
sugar to taste if desired
crushed ice
Pour above ingredients into
blender and mix well. Serve
with lemon slices or cherries.
Of course everyone in the
hot Southern weather knows
how to make a mint julep,
however, just in case you have
forgotten, this will refresh your
memory and your thirst.
Pack a glass with crushed
ice, then crush a mint leaf and
rub around inside edge of glass.
Fill glass with bourbon and
stick 2 mint leaves in.
For the more sophisticated
drinker who is willing to try
something different and more
expensive for a special event or
just to experiment these are
some suggestions.
Brandy Alexander
Fill glass with 1/3 brandy,
1/3 of white or dark creme de
cacao and 1/3‘milk or cream.
Mix well and serve cold.
Gold Cadillac
Fill glass 1/3 full of
Galliano, 1/3 Tia Maria, and
1/3 milk. Mix well and serve
cold.
Pack
Irish Mist
an old fashion
glass
with crushed ice and pour in
Irish whisky.
There are many mixed
drinks available and even more
variations on these drinks.
Take one of your favorite
drinks and try substitutions
with other liquors and/or
mixers to see if there is a better
way.
The packaged mixes on the
market are often very good and
can save considerable time for
the bartender of the evening i
