Vicious
Rumors
I notice that 20th
Century-Fox has released its
fourth ape movie, CONQUEST
OF THE PLANET OF THE
APES, which opened last week
in Los Angeles to the best
reviews of the series.
Apparently notable in this new
one is the cinematography,
done by Bob Surtees (THE
LAST PICTURE SHOW,
SUMMER OF *42), and the
spectacular location shots in
downtown L.A. which see
hundreds of extras made up to
look like monkeys cavorting
around Century City Plaza, etc.
We’ll have more to say about
the picture in this space when
it reaches the vicinity, but for
right now I’d like to propose
the First Ever Vicious Rumors
competition, open to anyone
who reads this column (that’s
nght, both of you). It’s an
exercise in imagination and
motion picture mentality
which should prove fun. Here’s
how it works
AS YOU KNOW, each of the
ape movies released by Fox has
ended on a rather final note:

major characters were killed

(ONQUEST is set in the
United States of the I990’s
and uses extensions of the
ESCAPE characters to get
monkeys back into the picture.
Here's what you do: send
me c/o The Red and Black a
plot synopsis of a future
PLANET OF THE APES movie
to continue where any of the
previous ones left off. You
must title the movie yourself,
and it must had the words
“Planet of the Apes”
somewhere within the title. In
200 words or less, tell me how
the series might be carried on
by some freak accident of
nature or some manipulation
of the human emotions.
ENTRIES WILL In- judpd
on the basis of originality,
cleverness, and calculated
idiocy the wildest
suggestions are the best, since
that’s the way movie people
operate. The best of them will
be published in this column,
and the grand prize winner will
have a copy of Pierre Boulle’s
novel PLANET OF THE APES
sent, with his compliments, to
the story editor at 20th

that he can read it for what
will be perhaps the first time.
In case you still don’t
understand, here’s an example:

Plaza Suite' is a pop?
By ELIZABETH SHEAR
Drama editor
The visitors from
Mamaroneck, Hollywood, and
Forest Hills converged upon
Neil Simon’s ‘‘Plaza Suite” in a
preview showing last night -
and University Theatre’s
Summer Repertory started its
1972 season with a pop. That
may be interpretted as slightly
less impressive than a bang and
a great deal more than a fizzle.
Playing to a very boisterous
audience that was nothing
short of amazing in its
enthusiasm, Director Sherry
Atherton led her actors
through their paces, sometimes
dragging a foot here and there,
but generally getting along
with the business at hand. The
first act, with Ruth Longman
and John Babington playing a
couple “celebrating” their 23rd
or 24th wedding anniversary in
the same suite in which they
had spent their first blessed
night together, was often too
pathetic to be funny, too true
to be slapstick. Simon’s
element, evidently; but the
morals were sticking out like an
awkward twelve-year-old’s
bony elbows.
The acting? Fine. It was
good to see these actors
playing characters faintly
resembling the same age group.
Believable, yes, sympathetic,
usually. But it didn't hang
together properly as a comedy;
it was too didactic, drawing
conclusions where it should
have drawn laughs.
THE SECOND act picked up
the pace considerably. Wendall
Barnes as the overly-made-up
Mr. Rich and a famous
hollywood producer
successfully put the moves on
ye olde high school sweetheart.

who could never come up with
anything more than your plain
old, average New Jersey kiss.
With Big Mr Producer wooing
and winning her with Vodka
stingers, name dropping, and a
little bite on the neck every
now and then, poor Muriel was
doomed from the moment she
set foot in the lush and
ludicrous Plaza Suite.
Another study in
frustration, but this lime there
was more room for the fun
stuff (both literally and
figuratively). The cliche-ridden
repartee between Kiplinger and
Muriel was fast-paced and
titillating: who would get to
first base first? With the help
of five Vodka stingers on an
empty stomach Muriel and
Jesse finally, much to the relief
of the audience, managed to
make it. Period.
TWO COUPLES looking
backwards and trying to live
for a brief moment in the
starlit past tense. Any success
at all would only be just that -
momentary. Perhaps that was
the sadness that permeated
their lives and put Neil Simon
on a surefire substitute for
John *‘lt might have beeh”
Whittier. Thai’s what made
“Plaza Suite" not a terribly
funny play. The characters
were at the mercy of their
situations, not leading them. If
there is anything funny in a
dying marriage or a frustrated
life, it has to come from the
characters of the individuals,
for there is nothing inherently
comical in either of these
themes. Be that as it may, what
was done in Summer Rep last
night was probably what
Simon had in mind when he
wrote the play, and you can’t
get much closer than that.
Setting and lighting designed
by Gerald Blades were
excellent. I have never been
married, seduced, or
honeymooning at the Plaza,
but if I had. I imagine that that
is what it would have looked
like
All things considered it was
a nicely done play. Not as
exciting as some other Simon’s,
but a nice job. Worth seeing.
But take along some paper for
notetaking. Class dismissed.

Have you ever heard of
S.2440? No, it’s not a draft
number, new secret agent or
the ticket for your laundry.
It’s the name of one of
Senator Alan Cranston’s
“babies" - the Bicycle
Transportation Act, that is
currently awaiting Senate
approval.
Sponsored bv Senator Alan
Cranston, D-Calif., the bill will
authorize states and
communities to use federal
highway trust fund money for
the construction of bicycle
paths or lanes, bicycle traffic-
control devices, and shelter and
parking facilities.
According to Senator
Cranston, the bicycle is
currently enjoying the biggest
wave of popularity that has
occurred at any time in its
154-year historv.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS
are praising the bicycle as a
solution to one of our most
pressing pollution problems.
Senator Cranston said, in fact,
that the bicycle is the only
known means of transportation
that doesn't pollute and that
includes the horse!
He added that health
enthusiasts have turned to the
bicycle as a means of exercising
the heart and maintaining
general fitness.
Senator Cranston sees a new
trend in the use of the bicycle
as transportation. He said that
more and more urban dwellers
are turning to the bicycle in an
effort to escape traffic
congestion and to avoid the
problems of downtown
parking.
The Senator cited several
examples which point up the
increasing interest in and use of
bicycles. He noted that there
are already some 15,000 miles
of bike paths «n use, including
the 32 2-mile Wisconsin
bikeway from Lake Michigan
to the Mississippi River. San
Francisco has opened the
Golden Gate Bridge to cyclists.
Davis, California has one of the
best developed intracity
bicycle transportation
networks in the country.
SENATOR CRANSTON’S
main reason for introducing
the bill is his concern for
safety. He said that the
California Highway Patrol
advised him that
bicycle-automobile traffic
fatalities have increased
The bicycle is the
only known means
of transportation
that doesn't polute
. . . and that
includes the horse I'
dramatically in the state over
the past few years. The
increase corresponds directly
with the sudden increase in
bicycle use.
In a three-year period,
bicycle traffic fatalities in
California increased by 117 per
cent. B\ contrast. the (it) <>t
Davis (Calif.), which has an
extensive system of bikeways
has had no bicycle traffic-
fatalities since physically
separate bike lanes were
established.
The Department of
Transportation has suggested
an amendment to the bill
which would expand its scope
to make funds available not
only for bicycling, but also for
hiking and equestrian use.
Senator Cranston said that
he has no objection to the

The American Gem Society and its members
classify diamonds according to four factors—
Cutting, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. Of
these, it is cutting, color and clarity which de
termines the per-carat price of average-size
gems.
Accuracy of cutting is of prime importance
to the beauty of your diamond since any de

fects fire and brilliance of the stone.
