WHAT SEATING PROBLEM?
This voung football fan had no problem finding a seat Monday to watch
the Bullpups down their Cletnson rivals, 31-7. Arrangements are a little
lighter for varsity games, but this lady could have easily brought along
several dates without even entering the ticket lottery. Definitely a fine
way to spend a sunnv afternoon. The Red and Black photographer who
captured this relaxing subject indicated that she seemed more
interested in the band and the cheerleaders than the fielded 22.
Fortunately her lack of interest in the baby Dogs did not affect their
prowess on the gridiron. For more information regarding activity on
the field, see page eight.

The Board of Student Communica
tions has recommended that Presi
dent Davison set aside part of the
student activity fee for use by
student media.
The resolution asked that a portion
of the activity fee be allocated to the
board for distribution to The Red and
Black, The Pandora and WUOG-FM.
The resolution further states, “The
total portion to be set aside for the
three media shall amount to no less
than the total amount received
during the previous school year, and
the Board will not be restricted by
the percentage allocated to each
media (sic) the previous year."
Davison's acceptance of the
recommendation would eliminate the
Student Senate's power to allocate
funds for the campus media
The board rejected a resolution
introduced by the Student Senate
which requested a recommendation
from the board that the "coat and
tie” policy of The Pandora be
dropped.
The resolution to present this
request to the board passed the
senate unanimously, according to
Art Ryder, senate president
“We are the stockholders in the
Pandora and we should decide how
we want our pictures made," said
Jim Williamson, SGA adviser to drug
use and abuse.
Wiliamson also said, “We are
seniors and this Is a one-shot effort.
We should wear what we want."
Steve Saunders, vice president of
the Senate, said that by imposing the
coat and tie regulation The Pandora
is presenting a false impression of
the person being pictured
Dave Bell, who represented Steve
Patrick, the original author of the
bill, said, "There has been some
question as to the value of The
Pandora as a yearbook, anyway.
Knocking out underclass pictures
and imposing coat and tie' makes
people value the Pandora less '
Saunders said. "In the past the
board has not been too keen on
infringing on editorial policy. We are
just asking that they strongly
recommend that John (Methvin,
editor of The Pandora) consider
dropping the policy
"We can't start usurping editorial
prerogative. That would set a bad
precedent," said Ryder "We only
expect a recommendation."
Williamson defended the senate’s
position. “If you don't like the
editorial opinion of The Red and
Black you can write a letter, but if
you don't like the Pandora's policy,
you have no recourse except through
the board. There is a question of our
censoring the Pandora, but we feel
the Pandora is censoring us."
The board, in denying the Senate’s
resolution, passed this resolution in
response:
"After consideration of the issue of
the Pandora requirements of coats
and ties for pictures in the Senior
Section, it is the position of the
Board of Student Communications
that while the judgment of the
editorial staff of the Pandora may be
questioned, the authority of the
editor and his staff to make this
decision is not.
"This decision of the Board is
consistent with the statement in
Article II of the By-Laws of the
Student Communications which
states that the purposes (of the
Board) shall not be construed to
mean that this Board will ever be
involved with censorship of expres
sion of any of these student media.”
Dr. Richard Noles, chairman of
the board, said "These two
resolutions represent exactly the
position of the board "

University Senate plan tabled
By JIM CORBETT
Associate sews editor
A proposal for student representa
tion on the University Council has
been temporarily tabled by a
committee now revising University
statutes.
"This doesn't mean that we're not
going to act on them (the
representation proposals),” Dr. Al
bert Saye. committee chairman,
said "They're just temporarily
delayed."
A rewritten version of the proposal
will be brought before the committee
again Thursday, Oct. 19, one source
said. At that time the committee will
again consider student representa
tion on the highest decision-making
body at the University
There was agreement within the
committee on the principal of the
University Senate concept, according
to the source But the "level of
student participation" on the council
was questioned
The proposal would rearrange the
proportional balance of the Univer
sity Council to include students. The
council and a few non-voting
students
The exact proportional balance
called for in the proposal will not be
available until the committee sub
mits its recommendations to the
University council. The council must
pass a draft of the statutes. The
document would be passed on to
University President Fred Davison
before the Board of Regents' final
review
Saye has emphasized the tentative
nature of his committee's recom
mendations. A previous statute
revisions committee which presented
a report to the council during the
spring of 1971, was disbanded after
their recommendations were re
turned to committee without action,
according to Dr A L Kleckner,
acting vice president for instruction.
The statutes were last revised in
1959
Kleckner said, "There were a
number of items in each of the areas
(of the recommendations) that the
faculty had raised some questions
on."
. But before a second report could
be drafted by the committee, he
said, Dr. George Parthemos, who
was committee chairman, resigned
his position as vice president for
instruction. Upon leaving the office
to teach in the political science
department, he recommended that
this new committee be formed to
revise the document
Saye's committee is expected to
submit its report to the council in
November.
THOMPSON
CAMPAIGNS
U S Senate hopeful Fletcher Thomp
son discussed campaign issues before
a crowd of about 75 in the University
Chapel last night Thompson, during
his speech which was sponsored by the
Ideas and Issues Division of the
University Union, touched on his
actions concerning Jane Fonda, whom
he "firmly thinks is guilty of treason"
for her Radio Hanoi broacasts. The
broadcasts. Thompson said, were a
"deliberate attempt to put fear into
our soldiers and to demoralize the
troops in South Vietnam.” Thompson
denied recent allegations by Atlanta
press that he has misused his
congressional mailing privileges for
campaign purposes The congressman
also discussed his efforts for limited
access four-lane highways, against
drug abuse and forced busing to
achieve racial balance in the
secondary school system. Staff

comparative literature department,
announced his resignation in a letter
written to Provost S. William
Pelletier dated October 4.
"Many faculty members believe
that the administration looks down
on the University Press, and takes
the attitude that if a faculty
member's work were good, he would
have it published at a place other
than the University Press," said
Brown.
BECAUSE OF this tendency, Lhe
12-member editorial board made a
request to Pelletier that a provision
be included in the guidelines of the
University Press that publications of
the University of Georgia be put on
the same level as those of other
institutions.
Pelletier refused, however, saying
that when a faculty member as up
for promotion, his published work
was considered mainly for quality
rather than for the place of its
publishing.
According to Brown, the board
considering promotions is often
composed of people completely
outside the field of study in which the
faculty member seeks a promotion
It follows, he said, that these people
would have a strong tendency to
judge the merit of the work on its
place of publication rather than on
its content
"IE" IT BE true that the promotion
system does not discriminate in this
way. why should the fact not be
plainly stated (in the guidelines'?”
Brown asked in his letter of
resignation
"My point is resigning is that If we
are working against ourselves, I
have belter things to do," Brown
said He explained that he is under a
great deal of pressure in meeting
deadlines in his own research and
writing
He also stressed that he resigned
entirely on an individual basis. He
said he knows of no movement
among the rest of the board to follow
his resignation
Pelletier could not be reached for
comment on Brown's resignation.
