Cold cures run from hot
|baths to throat lozenges
RECORDS INACCURATE
Auditor checks Pandora
If there has been one common cold cure advertised, there
probably have been at least a thousand. Oldies but goodies
include flannel around the throat, laxatives tor flushing the
germs, sweat-it-out blanket wrap-ups there is no cure for
the common cold This may seem a gloomy picture at first,
but it helps to remember that worrisome as they may be, few
colds have proven fatal in and of themselves.
SHORT-LIVED infections of the nose and throat are the
substance of the common cold. Though sometimes appearing
as rhinitis, pharyngitis or laryngitis, all forms of the common
cold have very basic and similar symptoms and all are highly
contagious Therefore, when one has a cold, he should keep his
distance, avoiding crowds if possible and covering coughs and
sneezes
Though a cure for the common cold is not known, the cause
has been determined as viral The virus may be present for
several days before symptoms appear, and an individual is
more highly susceptible when in a state of fatigue, chill or
poor physical condition.
SYMPTOMS include nasal congestion, headache, sneezing,
tearing, achiness. sore throat (caused by nasal draining). If
the more severe cold symptoms, such as earache, chest pain,
severe headache, hard or productive coughing or fever of 100

MACON, Ga lUPl) - The
State Board of Education has
adopted new regulations de
signed to crack down on
questionable career training
and private vocational schools
The board voted to approve a
General Assembly bill requir
ing licensing of private trade
schools. The bill stemmed
from requests of older and
more established schools,
which claimed questionable
schools are opening in Georgia
which take advantage o( the
public.
‘Two issues I’m interested
in are the City budget and
spread of strip zoning,”
Patrick said. "There’s a lot in
this town that needs looking
into.”
Patrick said he's lived in
Athens for more than three
years and considers it his
home After graduation, he
plans to enter the University’s
Law or Graduate Schools.

student an issue," he said. “I

degrees or of two to three days’ duration develop medical’
personnel should be contacted Otherwise, the cold can be
treated quite successfully by one or a combination of the
following:
1) Aspirin followed by large amounts of water or milk
2) Antihistamines or decongestants
3) Hot baths for relief of congestion (avoid chilling following
bath)
4) Lozenges to soothe the throat
5) Liquid intake especially of water or fruit juices in large
quantities (Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, and cola as they are
considered respiratory irritants.)
6) Rest, especially in the form of adequate sleep at night.
71 Exercise in moderation it not too tiring.
ANTIBIOTICS definitely will not cure a cold since they
attack bacteria and not viruses. In fact, taken unnecessarily,
antibiotics can cause the human system to build up a
hypersensitivity to that medication.
To secure effective non-prescription medications one can go
on South Campus to the Health Service Satellite Clinic located
in Room 223B of Graduate Studies where a Registered Nurse
can provide medications such as those mentioned above.
ON NORTH Campus the Health Service, located in Gilbert
Health Center, offers a self-medication program by which one
can go directly to the Pharmacy for non-prescription
medications. The individual experiencing severe or prolonged
symptoms should sign in at the admissions desk for a more
thorough examination during those periods of the day when
allied health services are available. These services include
laboratory, x-ray, pharmacy and are open regularly 9 a m. - 5
p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a m. - 12:00 noon,

The Internal Auditing Divi
sion of the University has
recommended revisions in The
Pandora's financial system in
its audit report for the year
ending June 30, 1971.
Generally the Auditor's re
port recommended that more
accurate records of incoming
and outgoing money be main
tained. The report cited cases
of lost and discarded records
and records which were
incomplete.
IN RESPONSE to this
recommendation. Hank Long.
Managing Editor of the Pan
dora said ■")" »rv to keep
a general journal on accoun
ting for space sold in the
yearbook and in the Miss UGA
Pageant brochure."
Contracts will be sent out to
organizations who wish to buy
space in The Pandora and an
accurate account will be kept
of the money and contracts
returned, according to Long.
Admissions tickets to the
Miss UGA Pageant will be
numbered and each ticket will
be accounted for. Cash re
ceived for these tickets will be
entered in The Pandora’s
records, according to Long.
The Auditor also recom
mended that the source of
funds be acc<ir>t«1v recorded.
The report cited specifically a
$50 change fund which was
used for petty cash.
Long said, "There will be no
petty cash fund this year. A
receipt must be received for
all purchases which will be
forwarded to the business
office (of Student Activities)
along with an allocations
request. Allocations will be at
the discretion of the business
manager.”
THE AUDITOR’S report
objected to the reallocation of
salaries for staff positionswhich
were not filled to the salaries
of other staff members. The
report recommended that sal
aries of staff members not
exceed the amount originally
allocated to them.
Long said The Pandora will
comply with this recommen
dation. Salaries for unfilled
positionswill be put back into
general operating funds.
The report also questioned
The Pandora's use of photo

of all purchases of materials
and photography will be
