Guitarist nearly a legend in home state
By ELTON MANZIONE
Adding to the list of
entertainment in Athens this
week has been guitarist Sandy
Bull.
Bull, for those who haven't
heard of him. is the highly
renowned Jazz-Folk guitarist,
and nearly a legend in his
home state of California.
Calling Bull a Jazz-Folk
guitarist is really a double
blunder.
"I don't really like categor
ies," said Bull, "and I wouldn't
consider myself a jazz or folk
musician."
Bull also doesn't fall neatly
into the category of guitarist,
since he plays the guitar, the
Turkish Oud, and percussion;
at one point in his career he
also played the banjo.
On stage Bull displays an
intense concentration and a
quiet mastery of his instru
ments. producing effects which
some musicians didn't even
know existed.
Bull's music has the almost
hypnotic quality of Indian sitar
music, although Bull does not
feel he is heavily influenced by
it.
“I like the twang in country
Sanford to present
Ecuadorian slides
Tom Sanford will give a slide presentation of his
experiences with the Peace Corps in Ecuador at the meeting
of the Geography Club 7:30 Tuesday night in 2B GGS.
Sanford, a new graduate student at the University, served in
the Peace Corps from 1964-1966 as a primary school teacher.
He will also show slides of the Galapagoes Islands.
The public is invited and refreshments will be served after
the presentation.

music as much as the drone of
Eastern music. There are
certain qualities in all music
that make them special ."
His knowledge of a wide
variety of music is reflected in
his repetoire which ranges
from Brazilian to the Country
Western standard "Memphis",
and a Duane Eddy influence is
somewhat noticeable in his
playing.
Playing since 1956 and
professionally since 1960, Bull
feels that his prime outlet is
music.
“I make music because I
don’t talk very much It's my
way of communicating and
expressing myself.”
The uniqueness of Bull's
artistry and his highly innova
tive techniques strip away any
mass appeal he may have; but
like a true artist he plugs away
for those who do appreciate his
talents.
"It's hard to play to a hostile
audience, but even if only one
or two people are attentive and
appreciative I try to do my
best. I just figure that
someone really wants to hear
me play and I ignore the ones
who don't. It's hard, at times,
lo play when a lot of people are
talking."
Since Bull has been on the
professional circuit for a
relatively long time, he says
his audiences are mixed
between the young and old
"I don't play for any
particular group. I had a lot of
older people at my last night in
Nashville, and I get a lot of old
kids."
With an extremely innova
tive and experimental style of
playing, one wonders if it isn't
a conscious plan of Bull's to
explore the limits of his art.
"No. I don't consciously try
to be experimental. I just try
to do things I haven’t heard
before. If I do an old number I
try to put my particular talents
to it. and it often comes out
very different. I don’t think
about it beforehand."
Does Bull ever get tired of
being a performer'’
“No. I never get tired of
music. I can't afford to really;
it's the only thing I do well.”
Bull does, indeed, do it well.
