when you’ve got players the

there may not be a whole lot of

Si ll I.. Wood is concerned
about the Ole Miss offense as a
whole It nasn't exactly been
bad. but so far it has failed to
be as productive as pre season
reports said it would be Wood
is hoping the Rebels found
themselves last Saturday in
the final period of that 19*13
loss to Auburn
"Our olfense came to life in
tin fourth quarter." he said,
explaining. "Four times in the
last quarter, we moved the
ball The fourth time, we felt
like we should have scored and
won the ball game I think
that’s going to help our
offense.’’

Auburn is the first really
top-flight team Ole Miss has
run up against this year, and
the setback gave the Johnny
Rebs a 3-1 record. Their
victories have come over
Memphis State. Southern Mis
sissippi and South Carolina.
OLK MISS had trouble
stopping all but the most
anemic offensive teams they
met last season The 1972
defense is dominated by-
sophomores and juniors and so
far has been somewhat of a
surprise
But it’s a young defense and
Wood realizes the offense must
help it out “We need to get
some points on the board to
take some of the pressure off
our defense." he stressed
Georgia blasted the Rebels
last year in Jackson 38-7, and

Ole Miss people say that was
the only time all season their
team was soundly beaten.
"Georgia has always been real
tough." Wood recalled, "and
this year they've got some big
people.”

Jones brightens defense
It, MIKK Itl.l'M
One of the bright spots of
last Saturday's loss to
Alabama was the play of
junior defensive guard
Danny Jones
Jones' number 64 was
prominent as he. along with
the rest of the Bulldog's
defensive line, did a good
job in containing Bama's
inside running game
Halting the Tide's ground
attack represents a form
idable achievement, as
Bear Bryant's charges are
some of the best executors
of the nightmare of defen
sive players and coaches—
the w ishbone
•THE WISHBONE, when
run right, is really difficult
to defend against As far as
my position as lineman
goes, it's an extremely
quick-hitting offense They
come right at you, and most
of the plays are from tackle
to tackle.” Jones said.
Jones appraised the Ole
Miss offense, and the
problems in preparing for a
pass-oriented team. "Ole
Miss throws a lot. which is
the opposite of Alabama.
Weese is a good quarter
back. and when he drops
back to throw he poses a
double threat because he
can either run or pass.
•1 PREFER to play
against a team that stays on
the ground most of the time,
because there's not the
danger of a quick touch
down at any time Because
of this you have to be on
your toes every second of
the game, although the
teams that throw a lot run
the risk of interceptions”.
Jones came to Georgia
from Thomaston’s Robert
E. Lee Institute where he
helped his team to the
North Georgia AAA
Championship in '%7
From there he went to
Gordon Military School and
later transferred to
Georgia.
Because of SEC regula
(ions. Jones had to sit out
one season, which resulted
in his being redshirted that
year
The major reason that
Jones came to Georgia was
Erk Russell, the Bulldog's
highly respected defensive
coach ' 1 came here
because Coach Russell is
the best defensive coach
around. He's a great coach
and a great man and
everyone resects him. lie
makes sure that everylwdy
knows what they're sup
posed to do. and always
makes you feel at ease
because he doesn't get real
inad with the players
You're not afraid to ask him
questions." Jones saie
JONES' philosophy about
football is simple and to the
paint. "You play lootball
because you love it It's a
rough game, it takes up a
lot of time and it's become
a year-round sport."
Jones put in a good
word about the great
amount of support the
Georgia fans gave the
Dogs in the Alabama
game.
"The people don't know
how much they helped us
Saturday When you have
the fans hehind you it helps
you to play just a little bit
harder, and it really made
us feel good to have the
crowd behind us like that".
TIIE «-:«. 235-pound line
man was optimistic about
the remainder of the
season "The biggest thing
is not to get down on
ourselves We played well
against Alabama, but all
the breaks went against us.
We've got to keep after it.
and if we play as hard
against the rest of the
teams left on our schedule
as we did last Saturday,
we ll win our share”.
