NEW PROCEDURE
Computers replace Coliseum for winter quarter registration
Hayakawa resigns
successful term
By RICK HEXLEP
An all-new system of regis
tration utilizing computers will
be initiated at the University
winter quarter
In part, the new system will
operate similar to the current
pre-registration plan How
ever. there will be several
changes which should help the
i student complete his schedule
before the beginning of the new
quarter
The major change in regis
tration will be a safeguard to
prevent students from reserv
ing a space in a class through
early registration but not
V

returning the next quarter to
claim it.
For winter quarter, students
will be required to either pay
their fees by December 12 or to
notify the registrar's office
that they intend to return
winter quarter For spring
quarter, all students intending
to attend school must pay their
fees by a date approximately
three weeks before the begin
ning of the quarter
IF TIIKSK deadlines are not
met, the student's schedule
will he cancelled and his class
cards returned to the master
registration files.
To register in the new
system, the student first
reports to his advisor and fills
out the registration forms. He
should contact his academic
dean or department for an
appointment before October 30,
which is the first day schedules
will be processed.
In filling out his schedule,
the student should be sure to
include the call number for the
course he wanted. All courses
have call numbers, but the call
number for certain courses
must be obtained from the
department offering the
course. These call numbers are
not found in the timetable.
Once at the registration
center, the forms are pro
cessed. An attempt to fill
incomplete schedules will be
made by using other sections
at the same hour for the course
that was unavailable.
IF THE SCHEDULE still
cannot be completed, the
student will be asked to report
to the registration center and
select alternate courses or
sections Students who com
plete their schedules at the
registration station in person
will be given their .fee. cards
and other material necessary
to complete registration.
For the student who obtains
the classes he requested the
first time, his fee card,
personal information card,
copy of the schedule, and
instructions for the payment of
fees will be mailed to him.
If a student completes his
schedule but does not pay his
fees on time, his schedule will
be cancelled. However, the
student will have a chance to
register again on late regis
tration day,-the day before the
start of the new quarter.
LATE REGISTRATION will
be conducted much like the
present Coliseum registration.
Drop-add will be handled as
it has been in the past.
Schedule changes will be
limited to the first three days
of the quarter.
A student may audit a course
with the approval of his
academic dean and the de
partment offering the course
The procedure is the same as
registration for credit except
that an audit card obtained
from the department must be
attached to the registration
form.
Students are reminded that
for laboratory courses, both
the lecture and the lab require
a call number to be listed on
the registration form.
Should any unforseen cir-
cunstanses arise, registration
can be completed as it has in
the past.
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -
Dr S. I. Hayakawa, a
no-nonsense administrator
whose tough policies brought
an end to student rioting at San
Francisco State College, re
signed Friday after four years
as the school's president
Hayakawa. a short and
stocky Japanest-Ameriean,
burst dramatically into the
troubled national academic
scene in 1968 soon after he
assumed the presidency. He
climbed aboard a truck and
ripped the wires out of a
loudspeaker being used by
dissident students and slapped
away their hands when they
reached for him.
Hayakawa also called as
many as BOO police onto the
campus to keep classrooms
open He denounced strike
leaders as "hoodlums "
“President Hayakawa as
sumed office at a most difficult
period, and with a specific
assignment — to bring peace
and order to a troubled
campus,’’ state university
Chancellor Glenn S. Dumke
said in a statement Friday.
"He's not only accomplished
this objective with effective
ness and dispatch but in the
doing of it became a national
symbol of the turning point in
the unfortunate cycle of
campus turbulence which
characterized the late 1960’s."
Hayakawa. who is 66, said
his resignation would be
effective at the end of the
current school year unless no
successor is named by then, in
which case he would stay on an
interim basis.
Holzer to
speak
Hans Holzer, a noted ghost
hunter and author of many
books on parapsychology, will
speak tonight at 8 p.m. in
South P-J auditorium.
The lecture is sponsored by
the Ideas and Issues Division
of the University Union.
Admission is free.
Holzer is an assistant profes
sor of Parapsychology at New
York Institute of Technology
He leads research tours
through haunted castles during
the summer.
His appearance at the
University is part of a
promotional tour for his latest
book. The New Pagans His
lecture is entitled The Occult
