MARRIED STUDENTS
Counseling for couples at UHS
lt% (i\\ K\ III M il
University couples no longer
have any excuse to throw
pottery at each other The
University Health Services
recently added a marriage
counselor to the staff.
Dr Don Murphy not only
counsels with couples who are
experiencing problems, but
also with couple who are
dating and considering marri
age.
"I think being able to offer
the service to this particular
age group is important be
cause most of these couples
are young marrieds. and are
working out patterns of relat
ing that they'll be carrying out
most of their lives," said
Murphy.
MUKPIIY. a native Geor
gian. holds a doctorate in
counseling. He has worked
with students at Florida State
University and Northern Illi
nois University.
As Murphy sees it, there is
really a need for this type of
service at the Health Service,
i think we're just beginning
to realize the needs of the
married student population.
The University’s got to recog
nize the special needs that
unmarried students don't
have.”
Even couples who are
considering marriage could
benefit from this kind of
counseling It is not so much a
criticism of the relationship as
an effort for improvements.
"Sometimes these couples
aren't very realistic in looking
at their relationship, and it
makes it more difficult to work
with I believe in realism —

what are our chances based on
what we really know about
each other." Murphy said.
Murphy would like to see
more couples coming in for
counseling before they begin to
have serious problems. He is
the main marriage counselor.
but all ol the other counselors
have had experience in this
field and would be happy to
talk to any students because of
Murphy's full schedule
"The situational pressures
sometimes get to couples who
have a strong relationship If
you help someone when they're
just working out, you have a
better chance of helping people
and changing them than if they
come to you in a very rigid
mold "
BFSIDES pressures, role
changes are another problem
area that has come up quite
often. "Most are having to take
a second look at male and
female roles and this has all
kinds of ramifications in the
marriage relationship or dat
ing relationship, people who
have the most difficulty are
those who have been brought
up on rigid ideas of masculine
and feminine '
Murphy has found that one of
the most successful methods of
helping couples with similar
problems is through discussion
groups "Couples groups are
helpful in this kind of situation
because there's a lot of support
to be gained in knowing that
other couples are experiencing
the same frustrations in the
same situation. Individuals in
a couple learn a great deal

about a mate by experiencing
them as they relate to a
group."
In some ways it has been
necessary to clarify the role of
the marriage counselor "It is
important to view it with a
broader understanding includ
ing helping to get people apart
without tearing each other up
A lot of times they’re almost
wanting to separate, and there
are a lot of couples who are
locked in a situation that
cannot be changed and they
need to disengage them
selves," says Murphy.
Murphy and Don Fowler,
another staff member, arc
exploring the idea of moving
out of the Health Services
building to be available in
Married Housing on a regular
basis.
As a closing remark, he said,
"I wish people would take
advantage of this when they’re
first experiencing difficulty
because the prognosis is so
much better."
