Students tested for sickle cell
Technicians from the Medi
cal College of Georgia col
lected a test tube full of blood
from each of some 100
University students Wednesday
to test for presence of sickle
cell anemia, a genetic malfor
mity of red blood cells.
The Medical College team
also presented slides and
filmstrips on sickle cell anemia
and counseled individually
with some of the students. The
Alpha Kappa Alpha service
organization sponsored the
program.
AKA and University Health
Services are recruiting people
interested in extending the
counseling phase of the sickle
cell program beyond campus
A spokesman for the Medical
College team said they had
tentative plans to return and
hold a similar blood test clinic
for the non-University com
munity.

By CAROLYN STEWART
Along with seven of her
southern sister states. Georgia
ranks among the bottom 10
states in the nation In
providing maternal and infant
care for its citizens, according
to current statistics compiled
by the March of Dimes' Better
Infant Births.
In Georgia, 20 counties have
reported no prenatal care
services and 31 counties have
prenatal care nursing services
only.
THE SITUATION of mater
nal care in Georgia was.
perhaps even more appalling
in 1965 when the Georgia
Mental Retardation Planning
Project appointed an obstetrics
subcommittee of Etiology and
Prevention
The subcommittee acted as a
task force on maternal health
and came up with 52 recom
mendations which would, if
fulfilled, vastly improve ma
ternal care in the state and
bring Georgia up to par with
the rest of the nation.
One of the task force's
primary recommendations was
a council on maternal health
care which was to oversee the
completion and maintenance of
its other recommendations.
IN ITS LAST session, the
Georgia General Assembly
established such a council to
advise the Department of
Human Resources on improve
ments in the delivery of
maternal health services.
A nurse from the University
Health Services was included
in the council which is,
according to the law, com
posed of a cross-section of
representatives of the general
public, including obstetricians,
nurses, hospital administra
tors. public health physicians
and educators.
Peggy Moyer, who heads up
the nursing service for the
infirmary, was nominated for
the council by the Georgia
State Nurses' Association.
"THE COUNCIL will alert
the public to the situation of
maternal health in Georgia,"
Moyer said. "We recruit
monies to support efforts to
provide services to high-risk
patients and support those
efforts to prevent maternal or
fetal illnesses. We will set state
standards for maternal care."
The council will act as a
lobbying group to place mater
nal health high on the priority
list within the Department of
Human Resources, according
to Moyer The council serves
primarily in an advisory
capacity to the department.
