AC-ROSS FROM THE MONUMENT
Tucked in all the china,
furniture, flowers and brides at
last Tuesday's bridal fair was
Elizabeth Post, granddaughter-
in-law of etiquette expert,
Emily Post.
Post, who was here repre
senting the Emily Post Insti
tute, spoke at both of the bridal
fashion shows.
"I enjoy this kind of thing,”
she said, “especially the bridal
part. That's the area we get
the most questions in.”
"Smaller weddings are the
tendency today,” said Post,
“rather than the larger affairs
of the past.”
She said weddings today tend
to vary from tradition. “That’s
fine: it makes the wedding
more personal - just as long
as they don't go overboard.”
she added.
POST SAID she hopes and
feels the institution of mar
riage is here to stay. “No
successful society has been
without marriage as an institu
tion," she said. "Marriage is
here to stay.”
How does etiquette fit into
today's world? That depends
upon the definition. Post said
"Most people confuse eti
quette and manners,” she said
“Etiquette is a code of behav
ior by which you are thoughtful
and considerate of others
"Manners are the way to do
that. I think consideration and
thoughtfulness are more im
portant than ever in this day
when we are overcrowded and
close together"
POST COMMENTED on the
difference between southerners
and northerners, saying, in
many ways, southerners are
more polite. “One reason is, I
think, the pace of life is slower
than it is up north." she said.
"1 think, too. southerners are
traditionally more formal and
have retained these more
formal mannerisms than nor
therners.” she said
Post laughed and said she
could make many comments
on women's liberation. "There
are good things about it
equality, careers, opportuni
ties. But 1 don't believe you
will ever succeed in wiping out
the difference between the
sexes,” she said. ”1 like the
niceties that make for a
pleasant social relationship
between men and women.”
Post said she did support the
Equal ltights Amendment.
ON HER TOURS around the
country. Post promotes her
"courtesy campaign” which is
being supported by the Emily
Post Institute.
"Through my newspaper
column and my radio program,
we are encouraging people to
write to me when they see or
perform an act of courtesy,"
she said. "We will send that
person a courtesy button."
Post said this will be done
weekly and added she hoped
this would stimulate more acts
of courtesy.
Following her engagement at
the Coliseum, Post said she
was going "home,” to Rye,
New York.
