MOVIE REVIEW
Allen spoofs jail movies
Music club holds dinner
By LARRY ESTES AND PETER DIINN
“Roll in the aisles — hold your sides —
eyes streaming with tears - laughter
accompanies every frame...,’’ said Joyce
Haber in the Los Angles Times. Joyce
speaks of Woody Allen’s Take the Money
and Run, which is to play this weekend at
the South PJ Auditorium.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Money is
all deathly laughter in every frame, but
it does provide plenty throughout. Take
the Money and Run was Allen’s first try
at directing and was definitely a good
success. His second effort. Bananas,
made more money and;therefore, was
more popular, but it was not quite up to
par with Money as pure comedy.
MONEY’S SUCCESS is mostly due to
its general satire of prison dramas like
Cool Hand Luke, and the true Crime
documentaries. The story is aided by the
"Untouchables" commentary, the mock
television interviews with various people
in the past life of the criminal-protago
nist, and the large cast of virtual
unknowns headed by Allen and Janet
Margolin, the female lead of David And
Lisa.
Money’s story retells Virgil Starkwell’s
(Allen) life from his innocent babyhood
to his unshakable life of crime. Beginning
as a child gumball machine robber.
Virgil fouls up every important job ne
tries. He complicates matters through
falling in love, getting married, gaining a
son, and spending a long time in prison.
If you enjoyed Bananas, you are sure
to get a thrill out of this one. Everyone is
invited.
ALBERT CAMUS’ The Stranger is
undoubtedly one of the most important
novels of the 20th century. The audience
should know something about the
background of this production in order to
appreciate what has been accomplished
on screen.
Camus’ widow sold the copyright of
The Stranger to Paramount on the
condition that she had the right to pick
the director. Instead of choosing a
Frenchman, she selected Italian director
Luchino Visconti (The Damned, Death in
Venice, Ludwig) to do the film version.
VISCONTI is often considered as One of
the Italian Big Three along with Fellini
and Antonioni He is of noble descent,
and his aristrocratic background is
evident in his lavish set designs It is also
evident in the vivid portrayals of the
upper-class present in most of his work
He is known best for his fidelity in
recreating different past periods
In The Stranger, which was shot on
location, the milieu of the 1938 to 1939
Algiers is faithfully and authentically
portrayed. Futhermore Visconti turns the
novel into a film “with out a comma
missing ”
Stanley Kauffmann in The New
Republic said that “Visconti has made a
beautiful, discreet, perceptive film of the
epochal work of the 20th century Western
world."
Even The New Leader critic John
Simon, who is generally hostile to
Visconti, cannot help praising The
Stranger as a “devoted and beautiful
visualization ..not a mere set of
illustrations for Camus’ novel, but a
respectful translation into another
medium, which while gathering radiance
from the original, also reflects renewed
luster upon it.
BOTH MARCELLO Mastroianni as
Meursault and Anna Karina gave their
best performances. One final word — this
film is in French with English subtitles,
and not in Italian as stated in the movie
sheet. French speaking people should
note that.
The Stranger will be shown on
Wednesday, April 4 at 8 p.m. in the South
PJ Auditorium.
