Brubeck show
billed fantastic
By GEORGE WILLIAMS
Darius Brubeck and Dave Brubeck.
two generations of Brubeck. literally
came in on a whirlwind Sunday when
they treated the University to two
fantastic shows at 3 p.m and 8 p m. The
younger Brubeck look the stage first with
four sidemen who would have been better
off playing rock than jazz Darius himself
gave a very uninspiring performance and
about the only thing which saved the
show were some rather good clarinet
riffs by Harry Robinson This continued
for about twenty minutes and then the
master hit the stage.
The elder Brubeck played one number
with the four members of the younger
Brubeck's group then brought out Gerry
Mulligan, Alan Dawson, and .Jack Six and
the place began to really shake The band
went through an hour of wild
improvisations and culminated with ten
minutes of Brubeck's "Take Five” which
brought down the house

Cement is scarce
NEW YORK (UFI) -
Cement, normally one of the
most plentiful commodities in
the world, suddenly has
become scarce nearly every
where.
The United States and
Japan, traditional exporters of
cement, have been importing it
for the past two years, the
United States from Europe and
Latin America, and Japan
from other Asian countries.
Korea is shipping cement to
Japan for the first time this
year and expects to supply her
with from 300,000 to 500,000
tons. Korean and Japanese
sources report a severe cement
shortage in much of Asia
because of a building boom
Demand for cement in Indo
china, for example, built up
steadily all during the Indo
china war and is expected to
accelerate once peace finally
comes to Vietnam and Cambo
dia.
Since rock and clays suitable
for making c. ment are found
practically everywhere and the
art of making it has been
known for 2,000 years, it may
seem surprising a shortage
could develop.
Insofar as the United States
is concerned, two large produ
cers. Universal Atlas Division
of U S Steel and Atlantic
Cement Co. of Stamford,
Connecticut, gave the same
general explanation.
In the 1950’s and most of the
1900's, the American cement
industry overbuilt new mills.
Com petition became so severe
prices were depressed and
most companies suffered sales
declines. When demand picked
up sharply at the start of the
1970’s, administration price
controls hit the cement indus
try hard because its prices
were controlled on the basis of
those during three rather
depressed years.
