“We now have (Jim) Baker (a
sophomore) and Keith Harris
at linebacker. David McKnight

Chuck Kinnebrew is slightly

The offensive line is stable
but thin with Jim Curington,
Buck Baker, Chris Hammond,
Mac McWhorter, and huge
Craig Hertwig holding it down
"Hertwig has the potential
and the physical attributes to
be al all-star," said Dooley
"All he has to do is want it bad

QUARTERBACK Neal Bor

than usual on the sidelines
Monday, and he was puzzled.
I must've done something
wrong, because I sure have
been over here a lot." he said.
With two more weeks of
practice and scrimmage left
before the annual G-Day game,
there will be a few more

helps Griffin
By STEVE BURNS
There are scads of very
f 1 large people that live in the
Si reknowned structure that is
1 McWhorter Hall, but Walter
Glynn Griffin can match just
about any of them, inch for
inch and pound for pound.
Glynn Griffin, you see, is a
shotputter by trade and he
does his thing well enough to
hold the Georgia school record
<— a toss of 57’9" at the
"Greenville Relays two weeks
ago.
^
G1.YNN GRIFFIN,
Don't gel the idea, though,
that he is some kind of
slobbering behemoth. Shotput-
ters have to be big to put a 16
pound hunk of lead any
distance at all.
"I WAS WHAT you would
call a marginal prospect in
high school," revealed Griffin.
"I wasn't heavily recruited in
high school I only weighed
about 195 or 200 when I
graduated."
"Georgia was the only school
that really recruited me." he
says. "Some of the others, like
Tennessee, sent me some mail
or something, but I just
decided to come here.”
Speaking of Tennessee. Grif
fin concurs with the obvious
when he says that, "They seem
determined to conquer every
thing. They have been pouring
money into every sport."
Georgia doesn't pour money
into any sport except football,
and is not even up to SEC

Tourney
scheduled
for May
Head football Coach Vince
Dooley has announced that the
annual Georgia Redcoat Open
Golf Tournament will be held
May 4-5 at Clayton, Georgia's
Kingwood Country Club.
The winner of the tourney
will receive a red blazer for his
efforts Several other "suitable
awards" will be given away to
participants, who will once
again be hosted by Bob Poss.
standards in track funds.
Therefore, the Georgia track
team, while containing many
outstanding performers will
have to go over it's head to
place high in the SEC, but
nobody is throwing in the
towel.
"Although we re overlooked,
it doesn't bother us," says
Griffin. “It’s the same with all
spring sports. People don't
plan on going. If they wind up
aUonding an event, it’s usually
by accident."
"TRACK." says Georgia
Coach Spec Towns, "is a tough
as hell sport." Practice isn't
quite as strenuous for a
shotputter as for, say, a
marathon runner, but is does
take work.
“It’s mostly just lifting
weights and running for
conditioning,” says Griffin.
"Practicing on the delivery is
the most important thing."
For the uninitiated, a shot is
thrown in a precise manner
that requires concentration
and coordination to bring all
the force of the body together
behind the put. "All the body is
involved, particularly the up
per body,” said Griffin.
Griffin, a junior, now weighs
a stout 250 and making slow,
gradual strides- toward break
ing the 60 foot harrier, which is
nothing to sneeze at. "I may
make it this year, but I'm just
not sure."
THE FUTURE doesn't look
bad for Grif. "I will get my
B.S. in agriculture and then try
to get into vet school." If no
vet school, would he like to
coach or anything of the like?
"I don't know I don't guess l’d
really mind it.
