Viet Cong attack
length of Vietnam
SAIGON -- North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces have
launched attacks in all of South Vietnam's four military
regions prompting fear of a majoi new Communist offensive
despite the cease fire, military sources said Thursday
The altacks were reported exactly one week after the
United States completed withdrawal of its forces here The
fighting was described as the heaviest and most widespread
since the cease fire became effective Jan 28
The sources said it ranged from the far northern section of
the country where Communists pumped 785 rounds of artillery
and mortar fire into a South Vietnamese position west of Hue,
to the southern Mekong Delta where 16 Communists and 23
South Vietnamese died in a three-hour battle
One military source said the Communist attacks were
probes designed to find a South Vietnamese weak spot and
prepare for a major offensive.
“They never wanted a ceasefire at all,” he said "Now they
are using the Joint Military Commission (JMC), the
International Commission for Control and Supervision (ICCS)
and the talks in Paris as a shield to gain more time to move
supplies into the country, send in reinforcements and prepare
lor an attack."
S. Georgia roads

ATLANTA — Portions of six state highways in south and
southeast Georgia were closed Thursday by the state
Department of Transportation due to flooding.
Those in southeast Georgia included Route 40 east from
Folkston to Route 110, state 121 south of Folkston and Route
185 from Moniac to the Florida line.
In south central Georgia, Route 135 south from Georgia 94 to
Jennings, Fla , Georgia 31 from Valdosta to Clyattville and
Georgia 376 from Twin Lakes to the junction of Georgia 94.
A Transportation Department spokesman said it was
estimated that the roads would remain closed through the
weekend.
Wall saves preists
in midnight bombing
BELFAST — The wall saved them, a British Army source
said Thursday. If it had been a little thinner two Roman
Catholic priests and their housekeeper could have been killed
when a 20-pound bomb damaged the parish house of a church
in Antrim.
"They were lucky,” the source said of the middle-of-the-
night bombing in Antrim, 14 miles northwest of Belfast
"If the wall had been any thinner or the bomb bigger they
would be dead "
The bombing was one of a series of incidents in Northern
Ireland where 763 persons have been killed in three and
one-half years of violence involving majority Protestants,
minority Catholics and British security forces
President asks laws
for pipe construction
SAN CLEMENTE. Calif - President Nixon Thursday
asked Congress to quickly enact legislation permitting
construction of the controversial trans-Alaska oil pipeline
He said it was necessary to cope with the energy crisis and
improve the U.S. balance of trade position
In the face of strong opposition from environmentalists.
Nixon rejected the alternative of building a pipeline across a
longer route through Canada as too costly and
time-consuming
Interior Secretary Rogers C. B Morton, summoned to the
Western White House from the Stanford University hospital
where he is undergoing radiation treatment for cancer,
emerged from a 45-minute meeting with Nixon to say the
President felt it was in the overall national interest to begin
construction of the 3 billion dollar facility as soon as possible
The 700-mile pipeline, which would bring about 200 million
barrels a day from Alaska's North Slope to the warm water
port of Valdez for transshipment by tankers to the West Coast,
has been under consideration since February. 1968
Environmentalists have opposed it on grounds the pipeline
would upset the delicate ecology of the Arctic tundra and
increase the danger of oil spills at the marine transshipment

the Oglala Sioux Nation.
Stills-Manassas
Disappoint Crowd
By KATHY ACKER
Stephen Stills and Manassas
made their debut at the
University Tuesday night to an
almost capacity crowd and
gave an overall disappointing
performance of a blend of
country, folk and rock music.
Stills, dressed in his traditional
garb, a football jersey, had his
moments of highlight when he
and Manassas performed sev
eral of his past hits, but his
solo performance was rather
deficient and left the audience
flat
Manassas, the lates second
half to Stephen Stills, were
instrumentally outstanding
with Joe Lala doing an
incredible bongo solo during
the performance of Stills' hit,
"49 Bye Bye Blues "
The show got off to a
mediocre start with Stills and
Manassas airing the latest
songs from their new album
The music blared and the
rhythm rolled as the group
ground out the relentless beat
of "Tears" and “It Doesn’t
Matter ” The audience, “psy
ched up" and ready for some
down home, boogie-woogie jam
were not satisfied.
Stills appeared at the second
half to perform "Change
Partners" and "Black Queen"
solo His guitar picking and
banjo strumming demonstra
ted his remarkable instrument
al skill and talent, but due to
vocal ineptness and poor
acoustics the preformance
lacked and the audience
became bored. The crowd
dwindled as Stills wound
himself out and by the end of
his performance only half
remained
Concert
Review
Manassas returned to per
form "Fallen Eagle" a taste of
their country blue grass and
the show came to it's highpoint
in a reminiscence with the
past. Redemption came with
the performance of "Sugar
Babe" and a crowd pleasing
jam session in "Carry On" and

etnamese President Nguyen
Van Thieu paid homage to the
56,000 Americans who died
defending his nation by laying
a wreath today at the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier in Arling

With less than lflO civilians
looking on and a chill wind
blowing Thieu placed the
wren" ' ’- ..ses and yellow
lilies — representing South
Vietnam's national colors — in
front of the tomb containing
remains of unidentified U.S.
servicemen who died in World
Wars I, II and Korea.
The South Vietnamese leader
ended the brief ceremony by
bowing deeply, and standing
stiffly at attention as the U.S.
national anthem was played.
