Masters

AUGUSTA — Tommy Aaron,
known for sizzling opening
rounds and equally- sizzling
finishes, fired a four under
par 68 to take the first round
lead in the Masters. Hanging
ominously over Aaron’s head is
the spector of four-time
Masters champ Jack Nicklaus,
who turned in what seemed to
be a routine 69
Joining Nicklaus in second
place is Japan's Masashi
“Jumbo'’ Ozaki, the closest
thing to the Nicklaus-of-the-
Orient, if only because of his
distance off the tee Bob
Dickson, the first Masters'
entrant off the tee, and J.C.
Snead, making his first Mas
ters appearance, are knotted
at 70.
AAltON, one of the early
starters, blazed through the
front nine in four under 32. one
stroke off the course record,
which he tied last year. The
Gainesyille, Georgia native
scored his birdies on the first,
second, sixth, and ninth holes,
and turned in a conservative 36
on the back side.
Aaron was in a similar
position in 1970 and finished
fifth after leading at the end of
the first round.
Nicklaus had trouble getting
untracked, and stood one over
par prior to a birdie on the par
five eighth hole, which he
reached in two He added
another bird on the difficult
par four tenth, and closed with
fours on the back nines' par
fives 13 and 15, narrowly
missing eagles on both holes
Ozaki and Dickson were
models of consistency in their
sub-par rounds, while Snead
blew hot and cold. Sam's
nephew started his round with
three consecutive birdies, and
spent the day wavering be
tween one and three under.
AS IIAS BEEN the case on
numerous occasions in the
past, the Augusta National's
treacherous back nine did in
more than one of golf's stars,
including Gene l.ittler. Gay
Brewer. Ray Floyd. Tom
Weiskopf. Burt Yancey, and
most notably Lou Graham,
who has finished one stroke
back of the tournament winner
three weeks in a row Graham
shot a two under 34 on the
front, but staggered in with a
43 on the final nine, including
an eight on the par four llth
Immediately behind the lead
ers at 71 are Grier Jones, who
bogied the final two holes, and
Phil Rodgers At even par 72
are Cesar Canudo, Dave
Stockton, Greensboro Open
champ Chi Chi Rodriquez.
Mason Rudolph. David Gra
ham. Hubert Green, and Steve
Melnyk. who is the only player
besides Nicklaus to conquer
the back nine Both posted

Fencer wins
The University of Georgia
fencing club may be small in
numbers, but its members
produce quality performances
nonetheless.
At a recent tournament in
Dahlonega. Bob Roney cap
tured first place in the foil
division whiie the other two
men making the trip. Bob
Kaltenback and Phil Adinaro.
advanced to the finals but did
not place among the top three.
Beth Lowery also gained the
finals in the women's division,
but she did not place.
i Foil fencing is usually the
only kind at most meets in
Georgia since very few fencers
in the state are familiar with
the other two categories *
There were no team scores
kept since the tournaments are
open to all amateurs, but there
were participants from Clem-
son. Banlonega, Statesboro.
and Atlanta vying lor mdividu
al honors
Georgia’s club meets every
Wednesday night at 7:30 in the
women's physical education
building Any student or
faculty member is welcome to
attend, regardless of ability.
Dr Norman Herz. head of the
chemistry department, is cur
rently a member of the club.
The fencers' next action will
not be until they venture to
Columbus. Ga.. on April 28 for
an open tournament. The big
attraction, however, comes
May 12-13 when the Bulldogs
host the state championships.
Like the others, it will be open
to any member of the Georgia
division of the American
Fencers League Accordidg to
a member of the club. Georgia
has two of the top fencers in
the state and should score very-
high.
