Women's Lib notwithstand-
g, the art of belly dancing is
ive and kicking in the Classic
ty. And the 60 or so Athens
omen and students currently
rolled in the lessons offered
the city's Recreation and
arks Dept, enthusiastically
spute the popular notion that
e dance is meant strictly for
otic nightclub acts.
Rather, as class instructor
imi Sultan explains. "The
-,nce is part of a culture. It
Ips a woman keep her femi-
inity, to relax. It’s a happy
nee." Mimi related that in
gypt, her native country,
■ery girl learns this dance
Sultan confided that she was
■ally amazed at the response
Athens women who wanted
sign up for the course,
classes were filled almost
immediately after a small
announcement was published
by the recreation department.
Tiny and graceful herself,
Sultan leads her students
through their weekly hour-long
routine which looks deceptively
easy. "Stretch — feel how it
pulls," she calls to one leotard-
clad young lady. "This type of
dancing is not the ‘one-two-
three to the left, onc-two-three
to the right' variety,” she
explained. "It’s all of your
body, your hands, your expres
sion, your movements."
Both Sultan and her students
see belly dancing as an
enjoyable way to keep in
shape. “It's really strenuous. I
didn't think it would be this
hard," commented one dancer.
“It has helped me to relax,"
commented another "I may
not ever belly dance, but I do
enjoy this." Nearly all of the
ccidental closes
eal with Soviets
students agreed that their
image of belly dancing had
changed since they enrolled in
the session.
"People think of it as a
'sexy' dance." Mimi said, "but
it is not that. In Egypt, it is not
called ‘belly dance'. It is a
culture dance, like the Spanish
Flamingo." She concluded that
a negative impression was
created by entertainers who
exploited the dance in exotic
acts and Las Vegas-type
settings.
Presently the ten-week ses
sion is being held at the
recreation department in
Athens' Memorial Park, The
classes are kept small inten
tionally so that each student
receives individual attention
and has ample space to move
about
Sultan and Donnie Riggs,
director of the recreation
department, plan to offer
additional classes this sum
mer. "I want to encourage
more University students to
enroll." Sultan remarked She
added that the course schedule
will coincide with the Univer
sity's summer quarter format.
It community interest contin
ues to grow . Sultan and Riggs
will offer an advanced class
for graduates of the initial
session “It's important to
keep doing the dance." Sultan
emphasized
As with any exercise, maxi
mum benefits result from
frequent practice. "In Egypt a
woman does the dance all her
life There's no end to it.”
Sultan said
The tentative date for the
summer dance session is set
for June 6, at a cost of $10.
Those interested in signing up
for the course should contact
the Athens Recreation Depart
ment at 546-7972.
