What's going on?, you're asking yourself as
you peruse this little graphic gem that we call
LOOKOUT!
It can't be The Red and Black, you reason —
this is Monday.
It can't be the Pandora. It’s too skinny, and
there're no nudes.
It can't be Impression. (Who ever heard of
Impression anyway?)
And it doesn't look a thing like WUOG.
So what's LOOKOUT!, you ask? Well, 1 have
to start at the beginning
WIIAT'S going on?, I asked myself, once I'd
made the transition from Sun Tan University,
sometimes called University of Miami, to the
University of Georgia this quarter.
Friends told me I was crazy and said I would
be sorry I left the hot weather, sunny beaches,
and fun of Miami for that godforsaken state of
Georgia where rednecks rule and beer-drinking
is the state pasttime
I was beginning to wonder myself if I wasn't
making a big mistake, but I smilingly reassured
everyone that Athens couldn't be that bad. there
are beaches in Georgia too, and after all, Atlanta
is only an hour away.
As it turned out. the joke was on me but I
didn't feel much like laughing my first few
weeks here at Georgia when I spent endless
rainy, cold days trying to learn to decipher
Souther drawls and longing for a good ol' beach
NOW I know how u fish out of water feels and I
sympathize! I had jumped from the tropical,
country-club atmosphere of University of Miami
where "play all day" is the school motto and the
thing to do was brag about how many classes
you had skipped as you exhibited your glorious
tan to onlookers.
Now 1 had landed in the rah-rah campus scene
at Georgia where people still get dressed up for
class and amazingly, sororities and fraternities
still exist.
And then I found out people actually attend
classes here, and some even go every day!
It was great to rediscover the thrill of sitting in
a room with fellow students while the gems of
education, were showered upon you, but the
novelty wore off quickly and I was soon back up
to my former devious strategy plans of “how to
avoid class and have fun."
A compromise was in order, with the end
result being to attend classes a few days a week
and then head for the beach and sun the
remainder of the time.
YES, going to the beach is great — if you like
driving three or four hours to get there. Cancel
that idea. Sitting by the poo) would be just as
good, I reassured myself.
That would have been great too — if I enjoyed
sitting out in a 30 degree downpour in a bikini.
I had just about decided I had planted myself
in the “Rain Pit of the Earth" with no hope of
getting out when I heard the good news that
Stephen Stills-Manassas would be appearing at
the Coliseum
Needless to say, the prospect of attending the
concert put me on the road to recovery, and I
was even beginning to think, "Gee, this place
isn't so bad after all.”
Five minutes into the concert I felt a relapse
coming on
I knew I saw Stephen Stills on the stage, but
that awful sound couldn’t be his singing, could
it?
I M AS promptly informed that it was, along
with the information that the acoustics were
very bad
this, however, didn't seem to daunt the crowd
who were so busy talking they even drowned out
the bad acoustics
Musically, I didn't get much out of the concert
but I walked out of there rich in the knowledge of
the life span of a flying squirrel and how many
six-packs of beer it takes to get a co-ed drunk
Since all my future beach and concert trips
seemed to be doomed, I was desperate to find
some kind of activity or entertainment to support
my theory of Skipping Class and Enjoying it.”
There was only one problem — I had no access
as to what was going on and aside from getting
drunk, no one else I asked seemed to know
either
IT M AS then that I discovered that The Red
and Black was planning a new weekly
supplement which would be designed to inform
the 'JGA student of upcoming activities and
entertainment on and off campus
And that's what LOOKOUT! is A weekly
feature of The Red and Black which will keep
you up on what's happening at the University, in
Athens, and even in Atlanta
Well try to cover entertainment, sports, arts,
and leisure And we hope we ll be a big help to
you.
but. on the other hand, you'll need to help us.
ME NEED you to keep us informed on the
activities of whatever you're involved in.
We need you to write for us — come be a staff
member, or contribute articles or reviews
Me need you to make suggestions on how to
make LOOKOUT! more entertaining — and
more useful
So give any of the listed staffers a call at
home, or leave your message or contribution at
The Red and Black office.
Like me. LOOKOUT! is new here. And it's
going to make mistakes
But we on the staff think it's an experiment
worth trying.
And we re hoping that you'll find LOOKOUT!
worth giving a hand from time to time — and
worth using
