Paul tonight
What do we know about Paul
McCartney? Mostly, that he’s
very talented and used to be a
Beatk . . . and that he has j
pretty wife named Linda. In
“James Paul McCartney," the
first television special in which
he stars, we learn much more
about the man, and the kind of
music he creates. “James Paul
McCartney" will be seen on
Channel 1 1 (ABC) tonight at
8:00, and features Linda
McCartney and the musical
group. Wings.
In this semi-biographical
musical special, we learn that
McCartney was bom and grew
up in Liverpool and still has a
large number of relatives living
there. We go back with Paul to
his favorite pub - to meet
some of those relatives and a
few friends, and to hear “The
Chelsea Reach.”
Naturally, any glimpse into
Paul’s life would be incomplete
Hydra Wednesday
By CAROLE LITTLE
It’s time again for the Spring
series of outdoor concerts,
thanks to the Union. The ball
gets rolling this Wednesday,
April 18. at 6:00 on Legion
Field as the Union brings you
Hydra.
THIS Atlanta rock band has
performed throughout the
Southeast with rip-roaring
reviews, and August will see
the release of their first album
on Capricorn, the Allman
Brothers' label.
But don’t be misled. They
don't profess to be another
carbon copy of the supermen
from Macon. These guys belt
out their own personal stamp
on all their hard hittin*
blues-rock. Be prepared for
some solid, good time r&r.
HYDRA has overcome the
sloppy, garbled sound that
plagues most local bands The
four-piece group performs
original material and revisions
of "oldies but goldies ” Wayne
Bruce takes the lead with his
penetrating vocals. You will
also find him moonlighting
with some fine guitar work.
Spencer Kirkpatrick, the lead
and slide guitar expert, has
been jamming in rock bands
since the mid-'60s. Watch the
sparks fly with his high-
velocity fingering and biting
sound.
Orville Davis slams out some
good bass that readily
combines with Steve Pace's
experienced drumming. Hydra
congeals into a formidable
band that puts out concen
trated rock music.

Here, Wings share the spotlight
with McCartney in a medley of
songs, including one of the
most famous of the Beatle
tunes, “Let It Be.”
A LOOK into what
McCartney is doing today
focuses on a production
number based on the theme
music he recently completed
for “Live and Let Die,” the
new James Bond thriller.
Another unusual production
number shows Paul with a
chorus line of 36 performing
"Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance.”
What are Linda and Paul up
to these days. . . they drama
tize it in a song called “Uncle
Albert,” which has the two of
them acting out vignettes
about different couples.
The special closes with Paul
singing the John Lennon-
McCartney classic, “Yester
day.”
THE GROUP has frequented
Athens in the past. If you have
missed them or are ready for
another strong dose, the
outdoor concert is your big
chance. Don’t pass it by.
