Charges to be dropped
against former POWs
WASHINGTON <UPI> -
Navy Secretary John R.
Warner has decided to dismiss
charges of mutiny and aiding
the enemy against two ex-pri-
soner of war officers, Pentagon
sources said.
One source said Warner
would announce he was drop
ping all charges against fighter
pilots Marine Lt. Col. Edison
W Miller, 41, of Tustin, Calif.,
and Navy Capt. Walter E.
Wilber, 43, of Columbia Cross
Roads, Pa.
The sources refused to
disclose the reason Warner
was dismissing the charges
against Wilber and Miller, but
they said it was not lack of
evidence.
Rear Adm. James B Stock-
dale, 49, formerly deputy
commander of all Amrican
POWs in North Vietnam, on
June 26 filed charges of aiding
the enemy and mutiny — both
of which could be punished by
life imprisonment — and five
lesser charges against Miller
and Wilber.
Shortly after Stockdale filed
his charges, Miller denied he
had done anything "illegal,
disloyal or harmful" during his
five years in captivity.
In a statement issued by his
attorneys he said: "I am not
ashamed of any actions I took
as a prisoner."
In April Wilber acknowledged
he made antiwar statements
for the North Vietnamese
without undergoing torture.
Additional details of the
charges were never made
public But Defense Depart
ment sources said Stockdale's
accusation were "very detail
ed" and "very serious ”
Miller has been in the
Marine Corps 24 years and
spent five years in captivity
Wilber, held captive for four
and ene half years, has been in
the Navy for 25 years.

A PUBLIC SAFETY EMPLOYE PREPARES PRINTOUT UNIT FOR TEST
The unit is a part of the new computerized detection system
Computer security system
to be employed on campus
By KEN ELKINS
Assistant news editor
The University Public Safety
Department will soom activate
a computerized security sys
tem located in various build
ings on the campus designed lo
revolutionize the alarm opera
tions at the University.
According to Ed Kassinger,
director of the department, the
current phase of the sophislo-
cated surveillance system will
be completed by the end of
October.
"We have a unique situation
being responsible for the
security of a university,"
Kassinger said, “Not only do
we have the problems thal the
police in most cities have, but
we have troubles unique to a
college campus.”
Kassinger explained that
research and experiments go
ing on at the University also
have to be protected from
burglars and fire.
We hope mainly
♦hat the system
will cut down
further on loss
due to burglary'
- Ed Kassinger,
Public Safety Dir.
The new system employes
plastic cards similar lo credit
cards to gain entrance to the
protected buildings inslead of
keys. "We feel that the cards
will be more effective because
they are not as easily lost and
they can’t be reproduced
except by a special machine,"
Kassinger said.
The system will protect the
buildings against unwanted
intrusion and fires. A later
feature that will be added to
the operation will be sensors lo
detect gas and radiation
leakage
Kassinger noted that the first
phase of the system was
placed in the areas of the
campus that needed Ihe
protection sooner Records,
computers and money falls
into that category, he said
The system, called IBM
System Seven, can accept
additional areas of surveillance
which will be added at a later
time. Kassinger said.
When completed, the system
will register intrusions or fires
at a central location in the
Public Safety Building
The computerized operation
will immediately printout the
location of the incident and
who the operator should
contact about the situation
The key unit of the system is
a large metal box in the
building which houses the
computer and stores the
information The box is con
nected to the unit that feeds
the information to the operator.
"We hope mainly that the
system will cut down further
on losg due to burglary.”
Kassinger said, noting that the
new operation will help the
department in its crusade to
reduce Ihe "criminal opportu
nity" on Ihe campus.
Heal sensors and intrusions
detectors are currently being
installed in six buildings on
campus with other buildings lo
be added to the hook up after
the system has been tested in
operation.
The installation of the
system began following the
choice of the individual system
last July.

“The entire second act of National Lampoon’s
Lemmings is devoted to something called the
‘Woodshuck Rock Festival.’ It is very, very good

one needn’t know the actual rock star or group
that is being mocked in order to enjoy it."
