"We were bad and Georgia
Tech was terrible,” is how
Georgia Men's Gymnastics
Coach Lee Cunningham descri
bed the Georgia Gymnastics
Association Invitational meet
held over the Thanksgiving
vacation
Actually, the Bulldog gym
nasts dominated the meet,
their first of the season, but
Cunningham was disappointed
in the overall shape of his
squad.
"I entered us into the meet
as an excuse to get us in shape
early,” chided Cunningham,
The Red and Black's Coach of
the Year in 1972-73. "But they
fooled me this time, they
weren’t in shape.”
BRAD BECKER, Gene Wat
son, Bill Hayn and Mark
Hadaway all took first place in
the floor exercises, on the
pommel horse, in the vaults
and on the horizontal bar,
respectively. The Georgia gym
nasts also swept places 2-5 on
the still rings, and Hayn earned
a second place spot for the
Dogs on the parallel bars.
Junior Mike Gilbreath placed
second in the all-around compe
tition.
Two of Georgia's top perfor
mers last season. Mike Raines
and Gary Lewis, hardly figured
in the meet, but Cunningham
attributed their below-par
showings to the fact that they
were out of shape
CUNNINGHAM cited fresh
man Chris Pizzitola for his
7.175 performance on the rings,
good enough for third place.
"Dave McKelvey, and Craig
Lewis (brother of Gary) are
two other freshmen we re hop
ing will help us out ” said
Cunningham.
Much help will definitely be
needed, since Georgia meets
powerful North Carolina on
Jan 19 and overwhelming
L.S.U. on Jan 26 in its next
two contests The two meets
may decide whether or not the
'Dogs can equal last season's
brilliant 10-1 record.
"We just might lose our first
two meets,” Cunningham re
marked. "L.S.U. has a super
team and statistically we can't
beat them, unless they get the
Hu or something The North
Carolina meet should be very
close ."
L.S.U., led by the muscular
Mike Carter, dominated gym
nastics in the Southeast last
year, and should continue that
dominance this sqpson. West
Virginia and Memphis St.
should be a notch below the
Tiger gymnasts, and on a par
with Georgia and North Caroli
na.
"L.S.U should be up over
160 points." Cunningham said.
“I’m hoping we can go over
145 sometime during the sea
son, and I'd be happy if we
were around 138 for the North
Carolina meet I think we can
win with that.”
"Right now getting people
into shape is the big thing,”
said Cunningham. “I really
don't know who’s going to be
working all-around, and I hope
Greg Corgiglia will come
through on the rings.”
Rick Boyer, a consistently
high scoring ring man gradu
ated. and Cunningham realizes
his services will be sorely
missed. Craig Presley’s the
only other gymnast lost to
graduation
"Presley will be missed, but
he can be replaced by one or
two people.” pointed out Cun
ningham "But Boyer can’t be
replaced ”
A lot of work and a long
vacation stands between Geor
gia and their first big meets,
but Cunningham has nurtured
the gymnastics program and
brought it to a very respectable
level A 10-1 record may be
hard to repeat, but this Georgia
squad stands a better than
even chance of doing it
