Rymer admits donating van
despite ONWARDs claims
From Staff reports
Tommy Rymer, an Athens alumnus
admitted Wednesday he donated a van to
ONWARD to use in last Wednesday’s
Student Government Association election
ONWARD members had previously-
denied soliciting such a van which was
allegedly used to transport Milledge
Avenue students to the polls. Rymer.
IN RUNOFF
however, said this was “a lie "
‘One of ONWARD s senatorial candi
dates called me (before the election! and
asked for a van to use on campus the day
of the election I assumed it was for
ONWARD in my mind I gave the van to
ONWARD," said Rymer, owner of a local
leasing company.
But according to Terry Wehunt.
ONWARD bookkeeper, the van is not
listed on any of the parties' weekend
financial reports, although the University-
student handbook regulations state that
all parties shall release ..an itemized
list of contributions naming the individu
al or organization making the contribu
tion and the amount contributed "

COALITION POSTERS REAPPEAR ON CAMPAIGN NOTICE BOARDS
Elections Committee reprimanded party chairperson Ruck Pennington for posters
Pennington barred
from campaigning
Coalition Chairperson Buck Pennington
was suspended Wednesday evening from
further campaign action by the Student
Senate Elections Committee due to
violations of runoff election rules by
Coalition members.
This action came about after Harry
Wingfield, former ONWARD candidate
for University Council, charged thai
Coalition had violated the runoff election
rules when they posted campaign posters
around campus early Wednesday morn
ing
Wingfield stated that "Although the
rules as published make no mention of
posters specifically . Becnel (chairperson.
Elections Committee) specifically stated
to both parties that absolutely no posters
were to be put on the campaign notice
boards and that all existing material was
to be removed. This was in order that all
campaigning in the runoff be verbal
only.”
In response to the ONWARD charges.
Pennington stated to the Elections Com
mittee that Coalition had not violated the
elections code
"We are not involved in violating the
elections code on two grounds." said
Pennington.
"First, the statement (by the Elections
Committee) is ambiguous as to what
constitutes campaign material and se
cond. we were never informed that we
could not use posters." Pennington said
Doug Eaves. ONWARD member, asked
that the Elections Committee allow
ONWARD to use posters from midnight
Wednesday to 3 p in Thursday, but the
committee rejected this and voted to
restrict Pennington for the actions of
Coalition members.

The Union of the American People
(UAP). which finished third overall in
last week’s SGA election, has decided not
to endorse either Coalition or ONWARD
in today’s runoff
"UAP has found both parties unaccept
able." said chairperson John Roddy.
"Coalition has taken stands against
everything we’ve taken stands for. ON
WARD has consistently taken no stand at
all
"Coalition is completely unacceptable,
with their cadre of minority groups and
chronic malcontents." Roddy continued.
"They have consistently shown that they
do not represent the majority student at
the University and don’t have our
interests at heart
Cheatham claims
foe avoided issues
By RICK FKANZM.W
Assistant news editor
ONWARD has consistently avoided
discussion of the issues in this campaign,
said Coalition presidential candidate
Paula Cheatham. Wednesday.
"Wo have clearly pointed out the differ
ences in this campaign between Coalition
and ONWARD, and ONWARD has failed
to respond to the issues." Cheatham said
at a press conference Wednesday after
noon at the University’s main library.
Cheatham said that "in the area of
discrimination oa this campus, we have
taken a stance of open opposition to it
and we have lobbied both for the rights of
blacks and for the passage of the ERA.
ONWARD, meanwhile, has said that they
will research the matter of discrimina
tion ."
Cheatham added that "instances like
this are not rare We have lobbied for
veterans’ benefits on this campus, includ
ing a deferred tuition plan, while ON
WARD has yet to discuss veterans or
what they plan to do for them.
"COALITION IIAS lobbied all year
long for a student regent, the sale of beer
and wine on campus and a new student
union, while ONWARD has made no men
tion of these issues." Cheatham said
"We are here to receive in education."
she continued, "but again ONWARD has
had nothing to say in the area of
academics, while Coalition has called (or
a balance between teaching and research,
an optional pass-fail system and a
teacher-course evaluation program."
Cheatham said that. "We have also
called for the establishment of a •
University judicial y whereby students,
faculty or administrators could air griev
ances against other students, faculty-
members or administrators.
Coalition to file charges
Coalition will file charges today with the Senate Elections Committee against
ONWARD concerning the distribution of newly printed material for the campaign,
according to Paula Cheatham, Coalition's presidential candidate. The committee
had previously ruled that no additional campaign material could be printed for
today's run-off election
According to Cheatham, the literature was distributed Wednesday to the
sororities and fraternities stating that "Coalition supported the National Student
Association, the NSA was anti-Greek, therefore Coalition was anti-Greek, so don't
vote Coalition. April 25." The material did not mention ONWARD directly,
however Cheatham said the material was false as the NSA makes no reference of
Greeks in its regulations, in fact, the NSA president is Greek
Huh?
The student handbook says that no one
“shall willfully refuse to comply” with a
traffic sign, but drivers might have a
little bit of trouble following all of the
directions on this sign post. Maybe a
construction crew will decide to help out
by digging a large pit in the middle of the
road

ONWARD was cleared of any wrong
doing by the Student Senate Elections
Committee in regard to the Friends of
ONWARD, said presidential candidate
for ONWARD J Rivers Walsh
“The matter has been appealed to the
Student Judiciary and will be cleared
there also." Walsh said
“Paula Cheatham's allegations of non
student influence are absurd." Walsh
said in an interview Wednesday
"I didn't know who the Friends of
ONWARD were. I never talked to them,
met with them or even suspected they
existed. Just how could these people have
influenced me." Walsh said
WAl.SII ADDED that, "if non-student
involvement is such a concern to Coali
tion. why have they allowed for a
Coalition president of SGA who in this
past year has not completed any course
work?"
"In effect," Walsh said, "he is a
professional politican That was proven
when he ran for City Council. If that isn't
non-student involvement. I don't know
what is
"Paula Cheatham gets very upset when
a group of alleged non-students pay for
radio spots, yet she sees nothing wrong
with a non-student being president of
student government," Walsh said
Athen s Southern Bell General Manag
er Jim Newman stated Wednesday that
he had donated $25 around the first of
April as a "personal contribution" to
University student and former Student
Senate president Joel Wooten as a
contribution to the ONWARD campaign
A senator from ONWARD called me and
asked to use a van on campus,
--Tommy Rymer
"At least ONWARD was something we
had to consider. We never even consider
ed Coalition." Roddy said
IN A STATEMENT released Tuesday
night. UAF > claimed credit for Coalition's
defeat, saying. "We believe thai our
forthright and aggressive exposure of the
financial mismanagement and radical
nature of last year’s student government
convinced an overwhelming majority of
the students that Coalition must go’’
"Certainly, the namby-pamby 'me-too'
campaign of the ONWARD party with its
attempts to outbid Coalition for homosex
ual. radical and black militant support
could have had no effect," the statement
continued.
In response to Roddy’s and UAP’s
statements. Tommy Bordeaux. Coali
tion's administrative vice-presidential
candidate, said, "Both UAP's and ON-
WARD's allegations that they represent
the majority student and we don't are
absurd There are no average or majori
ty students We try to represent the needs
of many different interests."
ONWARD HAD no comment on UAP's
statement, according to Tomi Elliott.
ONWARD administrative vice-presiden
tial candidate
UAP said that while ONWARD had
taken some stands similar to theirs, it
was only in order to get votes ON-
WARD's leaders, according to UAP's
statement. " have already committed
themselves to continued funding of all
minority special interest abuses we have
opposed.”
Judging ONWARD by "its predecessors
— Action Union and PSA,” UAP predict
ed that "the ONWARD senators in the
Student Senate will squish and cringe
before the far more dedicated and
articulate Coalition senators ’’
UAP ACCUSED ONWARD of "attempt
ing to be all things to all people." and
said that "the bulk of the ONWARD lead
ership consists of people who are offend
ed and annoyed by any strong adherence
to a great idea or principle."
UAP said that "in an intellectual and
psychological sense" it had more in
common with Coalition than ONWARD
"At least Coalition members are not
afraid to think or be committed to a
cause, idea or principle." UAP stated
"The sad truth is that many members of
ONWARD are frightened by such a
committment For them the election is an
end. not a means "
UAP concluded its statement by say
ing. "We will continue to operate alone as
the spokesmen of the dispossessed major
ity. of the culture-bearing Christian
European element which gave our nation
the distinctive stamp of its character and
which is now under concerted attack
from rapacious minorities bent on plun
dering our heritage "
Rymer had contributed money to
ONWARD through party members. Ry
mer denied the statement
"I never gave any monetary contribu
tion to ONWARD." said Rymer.
Regarding the Friends of ONWARD s
radio ads. Sandy Gwen, sales-manager of
WRFC. stated Wednesday that Rick
Bradshaw with the Interfraternity Coun
cil. ordered the spots for the Friends of
ONWARD, cutting two of them himself
Although Gwen said that Bradshaw
paid for the ads with an IFC check. Jeff
Gibbs, treasurer of the IFC. admitted
Wednesday writing and delivering the
Friends check for $207
“The IFC felt before ONWARD was
organized that we had to support some
one who was really for the Greeks, as
Coalition had cheated us 1 told the
members of the Friends of ONWARD
that instead of taking all the loose money
to the radio station, that I would write a
check on the IFC account" said Gibbs
He added this did not require a council
vote, but was an administrative decision
Gibbs stressed that these funds were
replaced by the Friends of ONWARD.
In explaining why IFC acted as a
"front' for the Friends. Gibbs said IFC
supports the ONWARD party.
There have been recent allegations that
alumni money was being "laundered"
through ONWARD student contributions
Informed sources of the Senate Elections
Committee admitted suspecting this ru
mor for some time, but stated that there
was no way to prove these claims
Wooten is not a member of the
ONWARD party, according to Wehunt
This contribution had not been listed on
any of ONWARDs weekly financial
statements, but Wooten explained that
this was because he had cashed the
check, and had not yet given the money
to the party since he did not know who to
forward the funds to
The allegations that alumni money was
"laundered" through ONWARD, were
made after examination of several large
contributions by party members The
members and the contributions are as
follows: Brent Patrick, $100; Terry
Wehunt. $100. Gene Powers. $100 Dan
Bolin. $100. John McKissick. $1()<). and
James Blackburn. $200
These contributions comprised the bulk
of ONWARD s campaign revenue
Wehunt. in explaining his $100 contribu
tion said, "the party needed money, so 1
gave it. and am now skipping a lot of
meals."
In explaining why the alumni would
want to make contributions to an SGA
election, an alumnus said that the
current SGA administration "had embar
assed the University this past year And
since we are concerned with the L'niver
sity. we would like to sc*e the University
have a better image For instance, how
would you get an 80-year-old man with
$100,000 to leave his money to the
University with the University’s present
radical image?"
Walsh predicts ONWARD
will be cleared in judiciary

HEW rejects regents' plan
HEW has again rejected the Board of Regents’ plan for desegregating the
University System and has set a June 1 deadline for submission of an improved
plan, according to a report in last night's Atlanta Journal
The regents received a letter from HEW listing deficiencies in the plan as spelled
out in a meeting last week between HEW officials. University System Chancellor
George Simpson and Associate Vice Chancellor John Hooper
If HEW does not receive an acceptable plan from the University system by June
21, it must, under a federal district court order, begin either administrative
procedures or legal action to cut off federal funds from the state's public colleges

WUOG staff selected
The Board of Student Communications has made its selections for positions on
the University radio station, WUOG, for next year The station manager will be
Patti Oates, the program director will be Lawrence Mink and the news director
will be Barbara Strong
"It is obvious that Coalition is trying to
cloud the issues with grossly exaggerated
rhetoric staged to frighten students on
this campus." Walsh added
Walsh also discussed the forums that
have been held this week in connection
with the runoff election
"I was initially encouraged at the
prospect of these forums as I thought
they would allow students not connected
with either party to ask questions about
issues,” Walsh said.
“Instead." he continued. "Coalition has
packed the crowds with their own party
members and have all but set up
cheering sections with a pep band The
result has not been a forum of students,
but an unruly Coalition mob."
