Inman holds onto
police chief 's job
ATLANTA - John Inman, fired as Atlanta police chief
last Friday by Mayor Maynard Jackson, held onto his
disputed job Tuesday pending the outcome of a complex
legal hassle over who will run the 1,600-man force.
A hearing was scheduled before Fulton County Superior
Court Judge John S Langford Tuesday afternoon on three
legal motions stemming from the fight over the chief’s job
Jackson said early Tuesday he was pleased the cases had
been consolidated in Langford's court and he was confident
his decision to fire Inman and replace him with Acting
Chief Clinton Chafin would be upheld.
Jackson said Inman's action Monday in bringing officers
with automatic rifles to his office to prevent his ouster
“was a clear abuse of the authority invested in him it
was absolutely inexcusable

Government begins
aerosol investigation
WASHINGTON — The Consumer Product Safety Com
mission today began investigating aerosol products under
its jurisdiction, including furniture polishes and window
cleaners, to see if they contain vinyl chloride, a suspected
cancer-causer
The commission said it would propose a ban in the near
future on the use of vinyl chloride as a propellent in aerosol
products under its control
In the meantime, it is asking various manufacturers to
notify the commission at once if vinyl chloride is used in
any of their products.
The commission became the third government agency to
study vinyl chloride in consumer products. The Food and
Drug Administration i FDA i previously launched a recall of
more than a score of aerosol products, mainly cosmetics
such as hair sprays.
Resignation throws
Europe into chaos
BONN A scandal over a Communist spy in his inner
government circle swept Socialist Chancellor Willy Brandt
out of office today but he said his resignation meant only
that a "period of work and courageous fighting begins."
Ills resignation after assuming "political and personal
responsibility" plunged West Germany into a political
crisis and brought dismay to the leaders of Western Europe
who saw it as a crushing blow to European unity. There
also were expressions of sympathy from the Communist
bloc which had approved Brandt's Nobel Prize winning
policy ol detente Brandt said this did not mean he is going
into retirement "No one should imagine that I am going to
abandon or neglect the cause for which I have worked all
of my life. Brandi told Social Democratic deputies. "Now
a period of work and courageous fighting begins."

Program to help students select major
By MERYL NASH
Associate feature editor
When a current UGA Career
Counselling Center project is
completed, students who need
help in choosing a major will
be able to set aside fatiguing
heaps of pamphlets and bro
chures, sit at a console, and
watch a sound-on-slide presen
tation about any undergradu
ate major at the University of
Georgia.
According to Dr. Nelle
Scholz. the counselling center
coordinator who proposed the
project, sixty per cent of enter
ing freshmen are undecided
about their major.
For these students, the nar
rated slide programs will pro
vide not only a general de
scription of each major, its
course requirements and its
career opportunities, but also
the comments of students and
professors themselves.
“The slide presentations will
be a lot more entertaining than
the usual printed information,”
said Frazier Moore, a 1973
University graduate who was
hired to create the programs.
“I’ll try to keep them as
much as possible in the words
of students and professors,” he
added "That way the unde
cided student will really get a
feel for each major — in some
cases actually see and hear
professors they’ll be taking
courses from.”
IN ADDITION to the areas
mentioned above, the presenta
tions will discuss graduate
work, and cover opportunities
for women and ethnic minority
students in the various majors.
Viewers will also be given
basic information about the
department or school offering
the major, along with the
name and phone number of
someone to contact for more
information.
When Dr. Scholz had pre
pared a format for the presen
tations a few months ago,
Moore began researching and
interviewing for the first of the
presentations. They will cover
majors in pharmacy, forest
resources and environmental
design.
A fourth presentation under
way Moore described as "an
umbrella description of the
College of Arts and Sciences,”
adding, "we ll focus on individ
ual arts and sciences majors in
later presentations.”
THE EQUIPMENT students
will use to view the presenta
tions will be similar to a model
recently under consideration
by the career counselling staff,
a tabletop system with a small
screen that makes the stu
dent’s view of the presentation
an individual affair
Career Counselling has or
dered several of the viewers.
When they arrive they’ll be
installed in a central location
with the first of Moore’s pres
entations and students can
begin using them.
Moore expects the experi
ence of producing the first
programs to help him devise a-

"No one knows how long it'll
take to finish the series,”
Moore said. "We've talked
about working toward one
presentation every two weeks,
but that may be optimistic."
EXPLAINING that his job is
funded through June, 1975,
Moore said he thought the
series would take at least a
year. (In one sense the series
will never be fully complete:
Dr Scholz s proposal includes
a provision for updating infor
mation in the programs when
it becomes necessary.)
High school counsellors may
find copies of the programs
useful in their work with
University-bound students,
Moore said. The presentations
could also be incorporated into
orientation and residence hall
programs, and serve as useful
tools for academic counsellors
in the individual majors, he
added.
