Athens Ballet Theater, form
erly Northeast Georgia Ballet
Workshop, has begun their
second season for beginners
and experienced dancers.
Stanley Zompakos. trained
'under George Balanchine and
former principal dancer with
Ballet Husse de Monte Carlo,
instructs the classes. Classes
are held at Gaines School
Plaza Fridays. 6:30 to 8 p.m.,
and Saturdays. 10 to 11:30 a m.
Transportation for both classes
from campus will be provided.

Ga. State hosts Chapin
for October concert
Harry Chapin, most famous
for his hit single. "Taxi" and
his two albums on Elektra
Records entitled "HEADS
AND TALES" and "SNIPER
AND OTHER SONGS", will be
performing in concert in At
lanta at Georgia State Univer
sity Gym on Friday, Oct. 11 at
8:30 p.m.
Tickets will be $4 for general
admission, hut UGA students
may purchase tickets at Cus
tom Sound in Athens for $3.

lor his successes as a record
ing artist, it has been consis
tent with his other careers that

enough to be recognized by
various industries as a winner

Before music, it was the film
industry that caught Harry's
eye as a highly communicative
art form a pierequisite for
his interests. He began packing
film crates, worked his way
into editing, finally writing,
directing, and scoring music
for sound tracks. He wrote
music for the highly successful
"Blue Water, White Death", a
film about the great white
shark which featured Harry’s
brother Tom In 1969, Harry
wrote and directed a film
entitled "The Legendary
Champions". This film was
nominated for an Oscar and
went on to win the New York
and Atlanta Film Festival
awards as the "Best Feature
Documentary". With over 300
films behind him, Harry turn
ed his talents to music.
His brother Tom got the nod
to be the host for an ABC-TV
Network children’s show enti
tled "Make A Wish". Each
series called for Tom to sing 32
songs about one-word subjects.
V\ilh nepotism showing its
power, Harry was selected to
write the music. He wrote 32
songs, Tom sang them, and the
show won the Peabody Award
for "The Best New Children’s
Show on TV." Included among
the songs with one-word titles
was "Circle", a song later
recorded by the New Seekers
which iK'came a No. 2 hit
single in England and Austra
lia.
Harry next decided to get
into music as a performing
writer, and he did so with the
same gusto and dedication he
brought to lus earlier work lie
received one of the largest
recording contracts ever offer
ed by a record company < Elek
tra i and. with that company's
president. Jac llol/man, by his
side to produce the record,
Harry recorded his first al
bum. The songs included
"Taxi", which soon became* a
national hit His first album
became a best seller and his
second album was later to
follow with si^nlar success.
Ham Chapin will appear
with his renowned group con
sisting of Rom Palmer on lead
guitar. John Wallace on bass,
and Mike Musters on cello He
is expected to perform many of
his well known "story songs”
including "Greyhound". "Sni-
|mt", and, of course, "Taxi”.

"award winning" perform
ance.
