| Women allowed to exempt jury duty
This neatly raked pile of garbage, left scattered all over
Myers quadrangle after last night's concert, seems to indicate
that the students in attendance enjoyed more than the music.
Tomorrow's concert in Legion Field at 8 p m will feature the
music cf the Peter Yarrow Band.

It is possible for women to exempt jury duty by virtue of
their sex, according to Georgia law
Along with persons over 65. convicted felons and people
employed in special occupations such as medicine, public
safety and teaching, women are allowed to exempt jury duty.
“I can't see any special basis for exempting a person from
jury duty on the basis of sex.’’ said Neil Alford, dean of the
University’s law school
"I understand if domestic or occupational responsibilities
prevent a person from serving, but not just for sex.’’ Alford
added
•TVE NEVER heard any complaints of discrimination or of
any test in the courts." said Ken Crawford, clerk of the
Superior Court. "A lot of women exercise their right to
exempt, hut I’ve yet to hear any complaints ”
Chappell^ Matthews, long-time Clarke County legislator,
was in the legislature when both the laws which allow a
women to exempt were recorded
WOMEN WERE first given the right to sit on a jury in
Georgia in 1953, according to Matthews. At that time »he
legislature said a woman didn’t have to serve if she didn’t
want to.
"In 1967, in a very close vote, the legislature further said
that women didn’t have to serve if they had small children or
would suffer an economic loss because of serving,’’ Matthews
said.
SOCIAL CIRCLE SCHOOLS
ATTENTION
Social Circle City School System has need
of the following teachers for the 74-75
school year.
• E.M.R. middle school
• Elementary teachers
The city people voted for it and the county voted against
it." he said
"There was no discrimination involved as far as I could tell
The main objection to having women serve was economic "
Matthews said "People would write in that they had lost
money serving on the jury because they were paid less than
the babysitters they had to hire while they were away."
"I THINK women have definitely improved the court
system." Matthews added I hate to use the phrase, but I
guess they’ve made it more refined
"They’ve speeded things up a little bit." he explained
"They don’t drag it out until nine o'clock at night to get the
free supper like men used to. It’s not that they hurry ; it's just
that they get things done."
Women also want both sides to prove their case, while a
man will assume things, according to Matthews "A man will
assume a car went off the road if it lands on the bank, but a
woman wants it proven." he said
MANY PEOPLE, have claimed that women are more
easy-going on criminals than men. reducing the number of
convictions in United States courts and possibly adding to the
crime rate

As far as convictions go. bringing women into the jury is
not the reason fewer convictions are being brought today
Attorneys go into the court with cases they haven't adequately
prepared, and people, men or women, are not going to convict
without valid evidence," Matthews said.
THE EXEMPTION of women was one item on a
questionnaire recently sent to the registered voters in Clarke
County from the office of the Superior Court
"The purpose of the questionnaires is to determine who is
eligible for jury duty." Crawford explained.
The response of people filling out the cards has been "pretty
good." according to Crawford "So far. about 8,509 of the
questionnaires have been returned." he said
Crawford expects the jury list to be completed in January
The exemptions will be removed and the rest will become
prospective jurors
hs more than a movie. It's a celebration.

Editor's note: The restaurant review column will be a regular
weekly feature focusing on restaurants in the Athens area.
It’s really a pretty drive out to Swamp Guinea Green trees,
yellow fields, and wooden houses by the side of the road. Miles
and miles of them.
Swamp Guinea is a kind of all-you-can-eat miscellaneous
restaurant, and I am seriously thinking of peddling maps to it
in front of Memorial Hall It's a pretty good place but I got
lost on the way out there, and I’ve been living here six years
WE WENT driving out with another car full of people
following us
"There’s a sign on the left,” I said. We kept looking and

looking and no sign
Finally I decided that even though I was lost we were so far
out that l wasn't gdffig to tell any one Then 1 decided*! would.
Finally we asked diiActpmt?
We went down one long road Then another. Even the
driveway to Swamp Guinea is long
IIY THE time you make it to the building, which is a
polished red-gold wood, you’re twice as hungry as you were
when you started which is good because there's so much food
they have to wheel it around on a push cart
We got catfish and perch. It comes with a big wooden bowl
of coleslaw, a plate of hush puppies and french fries and
platters of fish and a pitcher of iced tea. $2.50 for the perch
and $2.75 for the* catfish.
Everything on the menu goes that way. different kinds of
fried fish, barbeque. eggs-and-ham and so on
THE CROWNING touch is a kind of house specialty for
which you pay $3.50 and get a variety that would impress an
army; fish, barbeque. ham. brunswick stew, chicken, shrimp,
and what all 1 can hardly remember. The catch is that if you
go in a group everyone in the group has to order the special,
but if you're willing to pay the extra dollar you can guarantee
being stuffed enough that your friends have to carry you out
What I’m getting around to in a round about way is that this
is a good place to stuff your face at. but that the quantity
exceeds the quality. The food is good enough to make you
keep eating. Period
They have those little hushpuppies that look like fingers,
and the french fries were cold but the fith was good
As for how to get out there, your best liet is to find someone
who’s been and either get them to draw you a map or go with
thi*m It’s indescribable
On our four star rating scale (just like the movies) which is
based on tl) economy (2) convenience i3> food (4) service,
this restaurant gets a two and a half

Veterans seeking outpatient
treatment at VA expense will
find that some of the require
ments have been broadened
making it possible for more
veterans to be eligible for such
benefits, according to the Geor
gia Department of Veterans
Service
Public Law 91-102 has been
amended by Public I*aw 93-82
to provide that a veteran who
has been rated at least 80
percent disabled from service-
connected causes is eligible to
receive VA outpatient treat
ment for all disabilities, both
service and non-service con
nected
THIS BENEFIT is applicable
also to those veterans entitled
to a 100 percent rating because
their service-connected disabi
lities render them unemploy a
ble. Any 100 percent disabled
veteran who was previously
furnished a VA out-patient
treatment ID card may conti
nue to use the card to obtain
medical care at VA expense
In addition, those veterans
rated 80 and 90 percent disa
bled due to service-connected
causes are now eligible to
apply for the card authorizing
them to receive VA-paid outpa
tient medical care for any and
all disabilities
