TPC tourney
By RICK FRANZMAN

The day before the Tourna
ment Players Championship
began at the Atlanta Country
Hub two dozen of the longest
hitlers in golf stepped up to the
first tee and took nine swings
at the ball in the PGA sanc
tioned long driving contest.
They were shooting at a grid
marked off like half a football
field with the distances rang
ing from 270 yards to 320
yards
Augusta's Jim Dent won the
$5.ooo first prize with one
swing knocking the ball over
the grid at 325 yards Nobody
else even came close
ON TIIE FIRST day of the
tournament, eventual runnerup
J.C. Snead tied the course
record with a blistering 64.
Rookie Tom Hill was second
one shot in back of Snead at
the end of the first day. but he
was eliminated from the tour
nament because he missed his
too time Friday morning —
perhaps due to celebrating
Thursday's round.
It became apparent on Fri
day that that is the most
important day of the week to
most professional golfers Hav
ing shot 73s and 74s on Thurs
day. they must have good
rounds or. Friday to make the
all important cut If they don't
make the cut, they’ve wasted
the whole week They don't get
paid for two days of golf
One notable exception
though, was golf's leading
money winner for 1974. I’m
sure he's a nice guy when he's
winning, but watching Johnny
Miller play Friday you would
never know it On one particu
lar hole which Miller double
bogeyed. he had to make a left
handed shot from behind a tree
and barely waited for his
playing partners to putt out
before avoiding fans and stalk
ing of to the next tee by a route
other than the one prescribed
by tournament officials.
On Saturday, writers gather
ed around Jack Nickiaus to
hear him argue against the
TPC becoming a fifth major
tournament on the grounds
that it had no tradition or
international flavor.
ON SUNDAY. Nickiaus. the
Golden Bear of golf, was three
strokes off the lead He played
immediately ahead of the lead
er J.C. Snead and he' played
slowly. On many holes. Snead
would watch from the fairway
as Nickiaus relentlessly drop
ped birdie putt after birdie putt
into the hole
On the scoreboards, the fans
watched in virtual awe as Big
Jack methodically caught and
passed Snead at the end of 14
holes Then the rains came
drenching everyone and every
thing while putting a one day
delay to the inevitable. An
amazing number of people
though, stood wet and misera
ble under trees and tents
watching the ducks play in the
fairway of the 18th hole
On Monday. Nickiaus exuded
confidence He played out the
final four holes in par fashion.
Behind him. Snead looked phy
sically and emotionally drain
ed. You could tell that the
incredible pressure that Nick
iaus had put on him the day-
before had taken its toll. «
When he stepped up to the
par-5 18th hole, he was still
trailing Jack by two strokes
Just to tie him, Snead would
have to duplicate his feat of
Saturday — eagle the hole
Snead choked his tee shot His
foot slipped just slightly in the
remnants of Sunday's mud His
shot sliced to the right and was
short. He parred the hole and
took home a second place
paycheck He walked hurriedly
with his head down up to the
press tent where he found that
everyone wanted to talk with
Nickiaus

Texas,

Things are getting stickier
and stickier as the major
league baseball season rapidly
draws to a close. With less
than 15 games remaining on
the schedule, there are still
four legitimate pennant races
that may go right down to the
wire.
Some of those races didn’t
figure to be races at the
beginning of the season, but
two new managers in the
American league have sur
prised the baseball world by
turning previously hapless
teams into real live contenders
this year
Billy Martin of Texas and
Bill Virdon of New York, both
in their first full year, have
shamefaced the critics. Both
teams were written off as no
better than fourth in their
respective divisions at the sea
son's outset. At this writing,
however, the Yankees are at
the top of the heap in the AL
East and the Rangers are
giving the Oakland A s more
trouble than they’ve had in
four years
Unfortunately. Texas and
Oakland art* through with each
other for the year If they had
a series left to go. 1 would hate
to have pick the winner. Mar
tin has done such an outstand
ing job of pumping adrenalin
into that team all year, that
they might have just reared up
and beatt'n the A’s head to

Although this probably isn’t
the year of the pennant for the
Rangers, it has been quite a
year for them Jeff Burroughs
has been little short of sensa
tional in leading the league m
RBI’s all season The pitching
with Jim Bibby and Ferguson
Jenkins leading the way has
been excellent. Oakland though,
probably has a little too much
firepower and too big a lead
for Texas to cope with at this
point. In baseball though, any
thing can and usually does
happen Don’t be surprised if it
does in the AL West
Over in the eastern half of
the league. Bill Virdon is the
other new manager who is
working miracles Perennial
pennant winner Baltimore
looked up three weeks ago and
saw Boston way out there in
front and decided it was time
to go catch them They did. but
when they looked again there
was the name of that team that
everyone thoug’it was extinct
— the New York Yankees
Everyone thought that when
they tore down the stadium,
the team went with it But they
were again as if risen from the
dead Back on top in Septem

but the script was reading the

Exactly what Bill Virdon has
done up there is difficult to
figure out All those people
were around last year and
Virdon has managed before

tossup, “if my team wins, it
will be an upset People won’t
look at it that way, but they

most people think
Most of Georgia's problems
without much success. Maybe
they just like the atmospher
better over at the Big Shea To
win the it though, the Yanks
have still got a tough road
will likely be caused by quar
terback Rocky Felker and a
surly defense led by Jimmy
Webb Felker, a three year
regular, is expected to enjoy
his finest season this fall and
be among the cream of the
SEC quarterbacks. Felker had
a brilliant passing game
against William & Mary and
will likely give Georgia's defen
sive backfield all it can handle.
Webb . a senior and also a
three year starter, is up for
All-SEC and All-American
honors this year. For Georgia's
veer to be successful this
week, they're going to have to
find a way to deal with Webb
and Co.
