While most students spend
their nights studying or pur
suing pleasure, over 300 other
students go to classes in the
evening.
The University Evening
Classes registered 577 students
this fall, an increase of 20 per
cent over last fall, according to
Gary Norsworthy, director of
the program.
Of the 577 students enrolled,
approximately 400 are married
and work full time. Norswor
thy said.
••THE PROGRAM was orig
inally intended to serve work
ing adults, but it does serve
day students also, he explain
ed. '‘The bulk ol the regular
day students are between 18
and 20. Sometimes a student
takes an evening course be
cause of a schedule conflict.”
A day student must complete
a joint enrollment form to gain
admission to the evening pro
gram. Norsworthy said.
The program was establish
ed about 20 years ago The
classes are the same as those
offered to regular students,
according to Norsworthy.
“This quarter we are offering
37 different courses,” he said.
THE COURSES include most
of the basic freshman and
sophomore requirements in the
Colleges of Arts and Sciences,
Business Administration and
Education, Norsworthy added
Most of the classes are
taught in the Journalism build
ing. with the exception of those
that require special equipment,
such as biology. Norsworthy
said.
The classes meet on Mon
days and Wednesdays, and
students attend class the same
number of hours as day stu
dents. according to Norswor
thy.
He added that he is available
to the students on these eve
nings between 6 and 9 p.m. to
counsel and advise.
THE CLASSES are offered
on a schedule consisting of two
periods, the first running from
6:30 to 8:35 and the second
from 8:40 to 1" 45
Since the classes are funded
through tuition only, each class
must have at least 10 students.
Norsworthy said. The cost is
$12 per quarter hour, plus a
dollar registration fee.
“Registration for the evening
classes usually coincides with
late registration and closes
about a week afterwards.”
Norsworthy explained.
Winter quarter registration
for the program begins Jan. 2.
Schedules will be available at
the end of October.
